Trolley Company Leaves Wedding Business Rather Than Let Gay ...

Trying to reconcile your personal, religious beliefs that may conflict with running your business can be a difficult thing to juggle, which is apparently why the owner of popular trolley company has decided to walk away from the wedding business altogether rather than be hired by gay couples. The man says he didn?t want to compromise his Christian convictions by accepting same-sex couples who might hire a trolley for their wedding fun.

The owner of the Annapolis tour company says he?s going to ditch out on taking any couples and their wedding parties for rides because he?d have to take gay couples as well as the straight ones, and his religious beliefs conflict with that, reports the?Baltimore Sun.

To that end, he told the Annapolis Patch:??We?re a Christian-owned company, and we just can?t support gay marriages. We?re not trying to make a statement. We?re not trying to make a point. We?re just trying to be faithful Christians.?

He also wants his clients to side with him and lobby state lawmakers to institute an exemption for wedding vendors that would allow them to abstain from taking business due to religious beliefs. Same-sex marriage will become legal in Maryland ?in less than a week, so he?s cutting out while he can.

By walking away from the marriage business altogether, the owner is potentially avoiding discrimination lawsuits that might be brought against the company for refusing to cater to gay weddings.

?If they?re providing services to the public, they can?t discriminate who they provide their services to,? said the general counsel for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights, according to the Baltimore Sun. That organization is the one which enforces the laws that don?t allow businesses to discriminate on the basis of ?things like race, sexual orientation, religion and more.

It?s his business, and therefore he can do what he wants, as long as he doesn?t allow anyone to use his service whatsoever. The owner said he will post a full explanation on his company website by Jan.

He did admit to Eye on Annapolis to sending an email to a potential straight client that read:??we used to do weddings until recently. But we?re a Christian-owned business, and we are not able to lend support to gay marriages. And as a public accommodation, we cannot discriminate between gay or straight couples, so we had to stop doing all wedding transportation.?

The man who?d wanted to hire the company for his heterosexual wedding replied in an email, via the Annapolis Patch:??It is your right to run your business any way you see fit, but let?s be honest here, you drive a trolley up and down a street. Not exactly God?s work.?

He?s not the only business to step away from thousands of dollars in potential wedding revenue. According to the?Maryland Wedding Professionals Association, the trolley company is the second vendor to get skittish over the same-sex marriage law.

We?ve seen discrimination accusations against other businesses elsewhere, including B&B owners in Canada who reportedly refused to rent a room to a gay couple?and were subsequently ordered to pay $4,500 to the couple to make up for it.

Try This Exercise If You Experience Breathlessness in Public ...

I hear it all the time ? people contacting me because they run out of air when addressing an audience and they don?t know what to do about it. It also doesn?t matter how small the audience or how large. It can happen when speaking to 5 people or 500. It also affects both novice speakers and professionals.

Let me ask you a very simple question. Do you experience breathlessness when you are talking to your colleagues, friends or family? More than likely your answer is no. [Admittedly there are some who are breathless when talking in any situation. They tend to be women and they tend to be speaking very fast.]

If you do not usually run of air when in conversation, why do you think you have this problem in public speaking? Is it nervousness? Nervousness is certainly part of the problem but it is not the entire issue. The problem deals with the practice of interrupting your sentences to take a quick breath, also known as supplementing your air supply. You do this in normal conversation; however, you are not doing this when standing at the lectern or at the head of the boardroom table.

The problem of breathlessness goes back to 2nd grade. Because a child will often take a breath after every word when reading out loud, the teacher will instruct the student to wait until he or she is at the end of the sentence to take a breath. In the 2nd grade, this is not a problem because sentences are much shorter than they are in 12th grade. Herein lies the problem. By the time we reach high school, we are under the mistaken belief that we are not allowed to breathe until we come to some form of punctuation. What results is a huge gasp for air at the end of the sentence which eventually becomes a ?cat and mouse? game with your air supply.

You have what I refer to as a ?speaker?s license? which is similar to the ?writer?s license.? You can breathe almost anywhere in any sentence as long as you speak with emotion, with life, with color.

Read the following sentence out loud and take a quick breath where you see the asterisk.

I cannot * go to the store.

Did it work? Read it out loud again but this time pause after the word go. You should notice that you can pause after any one of those words ? even the word I ? if you speak with expression; i.e. shaking your head negatively as you say it or furrowing your brow.

After experimenting with this exercise, you should realize that you pause in normal conversation, sometimes to take a quick or supplemental breath or sometimes just for effect. The answer to breathlessness is to treat your audience like you were having a conversation in your living room. If you can accomplish that effectively, you will discover that your breathlessness is gone.

LG?s latest projector system is powered by freaking lasers

13 hrs.

Until now, all consumer front projector systems?produced light using lamps or in rare cases LEDs. The new?LG HECTO FP system, on the other hand, uses lasers for illumination instead. Yes, lasers.

As LG announced on Wednesday, the new projector system uses lasers and a Texas Instruments DLP chip to form images. Typical home front projectors require around a 9 to 12 foot distance from the lens to a 100-inch screen. The LG HECTO requires only a 22-inch throw to fill the screen and can be placed on the floor or the mounted to the ceiling.

The LG HECTO Laser Projection TV will be sold as a complete system with a 100-Inch diagonal screen, a built-in ATSC TV tuner, HDMI switching and a Wi-Fi connection for streaming video.

Specifications include a rated 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1080p resolution, 3 HDMI inputs, an optical audio input, RS-232 interface. Audio is produced by two 10W built-in speakers. The projector measures 5.7-inches high. The HECTO Laser projector does not have 3-D capability. LG has not? provided a brightness rating, a key specification. (Lasers offer the promise of very high intensity using low power.)

The screen is a fixed design and unlike theater screens its surface is black not white. LG claims the system will render a vivid, high contrast crisp image, even in lighter viewing environments.

The Laser TV supports LG's Smart TV platform and will stream movies via Netflix?and?YouTube as well as other services and?apps via its built-in Wi-Fi wireless Internet connection. The HECTO also includes LG's latest Magic Remote control.

LG claims its laser based illumination system has a lifespan of up to 25,000 hours, which is 5 times or more the life of traditional mercury-based lamps.

The LG HECTO Laser projector will be demonstrated at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show early next month. We expect pricing and availability to be announced at the show.

Russia Adoption Ban Against U.S. Sent To Putin After Unanimous ...

MOSCOW ? Defying a storm of domestic and international criticism, Russia moved toward finalizing a ban on Americans adopting Russian children, as Parliament's upper house voted unanimously Wednesday in favor of a measure that President Vladimir Putin has indicated he will sign into law.

The bill is widely seen as the Kremlin's retaliation against an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators. It comes as Putin takes an increasingly confrontational attitude toward the West, brushing aside concerns about a crackdown on dissent and democratic freedoms.

Dozens of Russian children close to being adopted by American families now will almost certainly be blocked from leaving the country. The law also cuts off the main international adoption route for Russian children stuck in often dismal orphanages: Tens of thousands of Russian youngsters have been adopted in the U.S. in the past 20 years. There are about 740,000 children without parental care in Russia, according to UNICEF.

All 143 members of the Federation Council present voted to support the bill, which has sparked criticism from both the U.S. and Russian officials, activists and artists, who say it victimizes children by depriving them of the chance to escape the squalor of orphanage life. The vote comes days after Parliament's lower house overwhelmingly approved the ban.

The U.S. State Department said Wednesday it regretted the Russian parliament's decision.

"Since 1992, American families have welcomed more than 60,000 Russian children into their homes, providing them with an opportunity to grow up in a family environment," spokesman Patrick Ventrell said in a statement from Washington. "The bill passed by Russia's parliament would prevent many children from enjoying this opportunity ...

"It is misguided to link the fate of children to unrelated political considerations," he said.

Seven people with posters protesting the bill were detained outside the Council before Wednesday's vote. "Children get frozen in the Cold War," one poster read. Some 60 people rallied in St. Petersburg, Russia's second largest city.

The bill is part of larger legislation by Putin-allied lawmakers retaliating against a recently signed U.S. law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators. Although Putin has not explicitly committed to signing the bill, he strongly defended it in a press conference last week as "a sufficient response" to the new U.S. law.

Originally Russia's lawmakers cobbled together a more or less a tit-for-tat response to the U.S. law, providing for travel sanctions and the seizure of financial assets in Russia of Americans determined to have violated the rights of Russians.

But it was expanded to include the adoption measure and call for a ban on any organizations that are engaged in political activities if they receive funding from U.S. citizens or are determined to be a threat to Russia's interests.

Russian children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov told the Interfax news agency that 46 children who were on the verge of being adopted by Americans would stay in Russia if the bill is approved ? despite court rulings in some of these cases authorizing the adoptions.

The ombudsman supported the bill, saying that foreign adoptions discourage Russians from adopting children. "A foreigner who has paid for an adoption always gets a priority compared to potential Russian adoptive parents," Astakhov was quoted as saying. "A great country like Russia cannot sell its children."

Russian law allows foreigners to adopt only if a Russian family has not expressed interest in a child being considered for adoption.

Some top government officials, including the foreign minister, have spoken flatly against the adoption law, arguing that the measure would be in violation of Russia's constitution and international obligations.

But Senator Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Council's foreign affairs committee, referred to the bill as "a natural and a long overdue response" to the U.S. legislation. "Children must be placed in Russian families, and this is a cornerstone issue for us," he said.

Margelov said that a bilateral Russian-U.S. agreement binds Russia to give notice of a halt to adoptions 12 months in advance. Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies that the president would consider the bill within the next two weeks.

The measure has become one of the most debated topics in Russia.

By Tuesday, more than 100,000 Russians had signed an online petition urging the Kremlin to scrap the bill.

Over the weekend, dozens of Muscovites placed toys and lit candles in front of the Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament after it approved the bill on Friday, but security guards promptly removed them. Opposition groups said they will rally against the bill on Jan. 13, and several popular artists publicly voiced their concern about the legislation.

While receiving a state award from Putin on Wednesday, film actor Konstantin Khabensky wore a badge saying "Children Are Beyond Politics." Veteran rock musician Andrey Makarevich called on Putin Monday to stop "killing children."

During a marathon Putin press conference Thursday, eight of the 60 questions the president answered focused on the bill. Responding angrily, Putin claimed that Americans routinely mistreat children from Russia.

The bill is named in honor of Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler who was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A Russian television report showed Yakovlev's blind grandmother who claimed that the U.S. family that adopted her grandson forged her signature on documents allowing them to take the boy outside Russia.

Russian lawmakers argue that by banning adoptions to the U.S. they would be protecting children and encouraging adoptions inside Russia.

In a measure of the virulent anti-U.S. sentiment that has gripped parts of Russian society, a few lawmakers went even further, claiming that some Russian children were adopted by Americans only to be used for organ transplants and become sex toys or cannon fodder for the U.S. Army.

Americans involved in adoption of Russian children find the new legislation upsetting.

Bill Blacquiere, president of New York City-based Bethany Christian Services, one of the largest adoption agencies in the U.S., said he hopes Putin won't sign the bill.

"It would be very sad for kids to grow up in orphanages," Blacquiere said. "And would hurt them socially, psychologically and mentally. We all know that caring for children in institutions is just not a very good thing."

Joyce Sterkel, who runs a Montana ranch for troubled children adopted abroad and has adopted three Russian children herself, said she is concerned for the estimated 700,000 children who live in state-run institutions in Russia.

"I would prefer that the Russians take care of their own children. I would prefer that people in the United States take care of their own children," Sterkel said Wednesday. "But if a suitable home cannot be found in that country, it seems reasonable that a child should be able to find a home outside."

Help me with life

I am a senior in high school this year. I will be going off to college next year, and up until I started riding motorcycles last year it has always been computer engineering that I wanted to go into. It's still a VERY viable option, but I'm increasingly becoming interested in trying to find some sort of engineering that could correlate in some way to motorcycles/auto. The best moments in life happened on my motorcycle in the last year, and if a job is viable I feel that could be the best way to go for me to be happy working for the rest of my life.

I'm not quite sure what jobs, besides mechanic, are really viable with motorcycles.

So, my question: What careers have you guys heard of, experienced, known, etc. etc. that relate to motorcycles in the engineering field? Or dealing with motorcycles? The closest things you know of?

Motorcycles are generally a hobby, not a career option (unless you are Dani Pedrosa) and unless you are a high level engineer or specialized mechanic the money is probably not going to be that great. Go for a high level engineering degree in a field that interests you to get a good paying career started, then buy all kinds of motorcycles and tinker around or do track days in your spare time. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks!

Trust me, I understand that motorcycles are mostly a hobby. But in my mind, there's also the people that make that hobby happen.

I'm quite aware that it's a long-shot, but I'm just trying to find if there's any even distant-related auto-related jobs that are plausible to try to get into. Computer engineering is still my #1 choice, I've stuck with programming since I was 9, but you can never have too many options!

I had a friend that went to MMI and become a well trained mechanic. After a few years him and a buddy left the dealerships they were at and opened their own shop. They were doing really well with steady business. But eventually he got burnt out and decided to enlist in the army. They closed up shop and I asked him why and he said the money was good but turning your hobby into your career kind of takes the fun out of it.

I understand that your planning on a higher level than he was at but it may still fit. I'd think your best bet would be try to get ahold of some manufactures of bikes and components. In Ohio your going to be limited to Honda (they don't build bikes here but sometimes test them near Marysville), Showa, or Harley if you travel. I can't think of anyone else off hand. Maybe look into R+D there's a place beside the Honda plant called TRC that does all sorts of testing but most of the engineers there work for Honda. You could get into tires those are always changing but the closest would be Goodyear and they aren't really known for motorcycle tires. You could contact Don Guhl of Guhl motorsports, he is the go to guy for getting the computer on your bike reflashed. They do a lot of performance stuff there and are a small enough shop that you can probably get in and talk to them about your career choice and how to go about it. They are in Pennsylvania somewhere.

About a month ago someone started a thread about this same exact topic you may want to dig that up so people don't have to repeat what they said in there.

Ill tell you what I always told my brother, what your career comes down to is this, you are selling your time. Get a good education so you can sell it to the highest bidder. No matter what interest you pursue in life it wil eventually become just a job that you do for money.

Of course, my brother didn't listen to me, went to school for police science and works for a box store.

Yup mechanical. I had my heart set on designing cars boats and roller coasters up until my freshmen year of college when I was way too bored and lazy in Engineering and realized how remotely small of a shot it was to do what I really wanted

My primary interest in high school was automobiles. I was in college prep but the guys in the auto mechanics tech program would bring their cars to me to tune (this was in the early seventies when emissions controls were new & absolutely ruined the performance of cars.) Everyone was always saying, "Why don't you become a mechanical engineer since you love cars so much?" My reason was I didn't want to ruin my passion by making it my job. I knew that VERY FEW jobs are really something enjoyable, but are a means to an end. I decided I wanted to do something that would allow me to make enough money to enjoy my hobby (cars, then later motorcycles) and still be a job that I at least wouldn't hate to do the rest of my life. You will find out that there is NO job that ends up being what you think it is and no matter what, you'll have good and bad days. So, what did I decide to become? An optometrist! In no way related to cars/bikes but a career wih good hours, good working conditions and good pay. I've been successfully self employed for 30 years, raised a family, and played with a number of cool bikes & cars over the past 30+ years.

Stepparenting & Blended Families

It's the most daunting task many parents will ever face: bringing two growing families together into one brand new marriage. But even though statistics show that most remarriages are at high risk--especially when there are kids involved--more and more people are learning how to make them work and more and more kids are coming out of them with their psyches and souls intact. This honest and hopeful book looks at those successes--and at some failures--to show what they have in common: ten essential secrets that are at the heart of a healthy blended family.

As a stepparent with six children in a blended family, Barbara LeBey draws on her own family's hard-won success, as well as on extensive interviews and new research to show how to navigate the stresses, sticking points, pitfalls and perils most couples don't even anticipate. Starting with her first controversial secret--that the new marriage comes first, even before the demands of the children--LeBey debunks prevalent stepfamily myths and anticipates common traps. (Among them, money issues, warring stepsiblings, and destructive exes.) A strong advocate for children (including how to guard against fade-out parenting), she also suggests ways that in-laws, schools, and the legal system itself could provide better support for blended families. REmarried with Children is an expert, compassionate, down-to-earth book to turn to over and over again for advice, support and sanity.

Key topics include how to:

-Meet your children's and stepchildren's needs--without letting them undermine your new marriage

-Understand the new roles, new rules, and the new relationships for children and stepchildren of a blended family

-Deal with angry and/or manipulative exes--without adding fuel to the fire

-Handle key decisions about finances, religion, traditions, behavior and discipline

-Maintain healthy relationships with your children's grandparents--and other relatives--from a previous marriage

-Recognize warning signs of trouble ahead--and get the help you need

"Blacky," a mutt adopted by young protesters, has become the most visible mascot, with rival fan pages totaling more than 7,000 subscribers or "likes." Blacky's admirers constantly upload pictures of him, many showing the mutt with a checkered kaffiyeh around his neck symbolizing the Palestinian resistance movement, dodging tear gas or growling at baton-wielding officers.

"Dogs are super loyal. They stand with the people and I think they support the students," said Catalina Echenique, 17, who is planning to study psychiatry.

Free-roaming dogs number in the millions in Chile in a situation the nation's Humane Society has called alarming. Dog owners rarely spay or neuter their pets, and commonly leave them outside when they go to work in the morning. Many roam the streets all day.

Dogs lurk around the presidential palace, take naps in parks and always seem in search of a bite to eat or the next protest.

While strays are feared in countries such as India, where tens of millions of street dogs have a reputation for biting people and spreading rabies, Chileans often feed and take care of strays. Protesters, for one, are glad to have the dogs on their side of the fight.

Students have been hitting the streets for more than a year and a half demanding overhauls to a school system that's been privatized since the 1973-90 dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. Protesters say families must struggle with underperforming public schools, expensive private universities and education loans at impossible interest rates.

Two military officers in impeccable white uniforms walked out of a subway station recently as two blackened mutts followed them ahead of a crowd of young protesters who booed and shouted insults.

More dogs followed the sounds of sirens ? and the promise of a water jet some blocks away. Police fired tear gas and the hounds ran to chew on the canisters. From a plume of smoke, Blacky dashed out, this time wearing an orange bandanna.

A mass of students and hooded members of anarchist groups loitering at nearby parks flooded into the streets for yet another confrontation.

Meanwhile, Echenique sat in a circle with other students, a stray napping next to them while they prepared to clash with police.

"With a good education we can generate conscience to protect animals," she said.

Despite the propensity of dog packs to join protesters, they're not at constant war with the police.

Just a few blocks from the recent confrontation, police and pooches appeared to be enjoying a peaceful timeout. One stray snoozed under the noon sun next to a traffic officer at a busy intersection, while another quietly napped in the shade cast by paintings propped on artist easels in Santiago's main square, the Plaza de Armas.

"I see the ritual everyday: police dogs patrolling the streets and strays watching over their territory," said Mario Guitierrez, a 52-year-old artist at the square who plans to make the protest dogs the subject of his next work.

"They meet, they stare, and it seems like the police dogs get scared. The street dogs are brave!"

Police officer Eduardo Basaez of the department's canine training unit strolled by with Lola, his 7-year-old German shepherd. They have both been part of street clashes, but Basaez said police dogs and horses are being used less these days to keep them safe.

"Dogs go to the protests because of a pack instinct. They play with the water jets, they're happy and don't know what's going on," Basaez said. "I'm a dog lover and I feel sorry for the street dogs. I live in an apartment but if I had a tract of land I would take them all home with me."

U.S. Navy SEAL commander dies in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The commander of an elite U.S. Navy SEAL unit has died in Afghanistan, the Defence Department said on Sunday, and a U.S. military official said his death was being investigated as a suspected suicide.

Commander Job Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, died on Saturday of a non-combat related injury in central Afghanistan's Uruzgan Province, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"This incident is currently under investigation," it said.

Price, was assigned to a Naval Special Warfare unit in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was the commanding officer of SEAL Team Four. He failed to show up for an event on Saturday and colleagues found him dead in his quarters, the U.S. military official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

NBC News and CNN also quoted unnamed military officials as saying that the death was being looked at as a possible suicide.

Lieutenant David Lloyd, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Group Two, which comprises the four SEAL teams on the U.S. East Coast, declined to comment on the cause of death, saying it was under investigation.

Price was married and had a daughter. He had been a naval officer since May 1993, Lloyd said.

Captain Robert Smith, the Group Two commander, said in a statement: "The Naval Special Warfare family is deeply saddened by the loss of our teammate. We extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and NSW community during this time of grieving.

"As we mourn the loss and honour the memory of our fallen teammate, those he served with will continue to carry out the mission."

SEAL is an acronym for sea, air, land.

Mark Zuckerberg Is The Voice Behind The ?Poke? Notification Sound And Wrote Code For The App

Mark Zukerberg PokeMark Zuckerberg invented Poking, one of Facebook's earliest features, so it's fitting he was part of the small team that built the new Poke app over the last 12 days. Sources say Zuckerberg actually wrote code for Poke despite saying he rarely programs for Facebook anymore. And that voice that blurts out "Poke" when you get a push notification about a new Poke message? That's Zuck, too.

LEGO The Lord Of The Rings: The Video Game Review

lotr lego game LEGO The Lord Of The Rings: The Video Game Review

What can be said about the LEGO series of video games that hasn?t already been said? Each game takes a beloved franchise and gives gamers the chance to play through their favorite moments, albeit as a LEGO character in a world painstakingly built of blocks. The first few entries had a cute quality about them that made it the perfect series to bring adult gamers together with their children. Gameplay was simple enough for a younger audience to understand, and the references and jokes paid homage to source material that adults loved.

But no amount of desirable franchises could keep the series fresh, as the past few entries have been guilty of rehashing the same quirks that made the original games such a fun surprise. Whether players are running through Hogwarts, playing as Captain Jack Sparrow, or stalking the streets of Gotham, the combat and puzzles never evolve into anything more developed than the forms in which they began.

So now we?re at the newest edition of the series, titled (take a breath) LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game. To say the source material is a rich base to build off of is face-palmingly obvious, but seeing as it is a property that video games have mined many times before, is Middle Earth worth another visit?

Everybody and their grandmother knows the plot of The Lord of the Rings series by now, but for those two of you who don?t, here?s a quick overview: Young hobbit Frodo Baggins is tasked with destroying the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom, and is aided on his quest across Middle Earth by friends of many races, including elves, dwarves and humans alike. Sauron and his army of orcs stand in the way of the Fellowship, and each member embarks on an epic journey as they strive to destroy the evil that threatens to take power.

The film trilogy is a modern cinematic masterpiece, and LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game takes all of its cues from the films. Voices and voiceovers have been lifted straight into the cutscenes, and fans of the films will hear enough familiar lines to bring a smile to their faces. Despite the serious tone of the series, the LEGO version tones down some of the more violent and thematic moments, continuing to inject cutesy humor into the game. No matter how much you love the trilogy, you?ll still laugh when you see Boromir brought down by having a banana shot into his chest.

One odd feature that Traveller?s Tales integrated this time around is an open world mechanic, which doesn?t fair quite as well as it could have. Rather than featuring a large open world that branches off into different story missions or side objectives, these open areas reside in-between each story mission. They serve as a way to break up the missions, but they don?t feel fully developed. Most of the time in these areas will be spent on whacking everything in sight and collecting bolts to spend on new characters to unlock.

Perhaps most baffling is their inclusion of puzzles within the first stages that can?t be solved until characters unlocked later in the game are usable. I understand that backtracking is necessary, but why leave all of these puzzles strewn about in a way that players forget exactly which character they will need at any time to solve them? A fast travel feature helps to shorten the distance traveled, but these areas just don?t feel organic. I dreaded wandering through these patches of Middle Earth because of the way the game taunted me with puzzles that I would need to remember to solve later.

Side quests are left unexplained, and the poor map system didn?t help things in the slightest. After speaking with an inhabitant of the world about their issues, a symbol would appear on the map, and after choosing to start quest, a translucent path of bolts would lead to the objective. But just like before, chances are you?ll have to haul yourself there and back again just to get the right character with the right item to do some silly, menial task.

Despite the weakness of these sections, they do serve up quite a bevy of extra content to wander through after the main story has been completed. The best way to tackle them is to power through the story without a second thought for these open worlds before heading back and wandering without a care in the world. This serves to stretch out the length of the game noticeably, with extra blocks, characters and object blueprints just dying to be found, but it?s still a shame that these sections couldn?t have been integrated better within the game as a whole.

Story missions, on the other hand, are a blast to play through, as the many memorable scenes from the trilogy have been expanded into enticing and humorous stages. Fighting your way out of the Mines of Moria is insanely fun, and diving after the Balrog as Gandalf is one of the coolest moments of the game. Every epic moment from the trilogy is translated into LEGO form without losing much of their punch, making the story quests the meat of the game.

Combat is relegated to one attack button, making it simple enough for anybody to pick up and play. Larger characters can pick up the shorter members of the Fellowship (Gimli, Sam, Frodo, etc.) and either throw them at distant objects or over obstacles they could not pass on their own. Everyone is given a constantly expanding inventory, leaving them with certain items that make each character important to solving the many puzzles scattered throughout Middle Earth. Sadly, the puzzles rarely require anything other than figuring out which character has the item needed to pass and taking control of them to move on. Obviously, these are fine for the younger demographic, but more hardcore gamers will be frustrated by the lack of challenge.

If there?s one thing that LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game nails, it?s the artistic side of the experience. The environment is constantly breathtaking throughout the game, and a lot of work was put into making Middle Earth seem as realistic as it was in the films. Tracks ripped straight from the films play through each level, successfully immersing gamers in each locale. The voices ripped from the films have a chopped up feel to them, but it plays into the slapstick of the game well enough to get a pass.

LEGO Lord of the Rings 1 LEGO The Lord Of The Rings: The Video Game Review

The childish humor integrated into key moments of the game is surprisingly hilarious. On the surface, kids will laugh at the random appearance of chickens or Gandalf?s rage towards a low-hanging light, but the deeper homages to the source films are more than enough to get a chuckle out of adults. This is one of the few holdovers from the original LEGO games that still hasn?t worn out its welcome.

However, the same can?t be said for the simplistic gameplay and puzzles. It?s one thing to be easy enough for children, but it?s another to never even try to stimulate their brains. It would have been nice to see LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game try something different than a few open worlds and a huge roster of characters, but it seems much more comfortable settling into routine rather than breaking the norm.

Had the piss poor open world areas been removed and more time been put into integrating new and unique features, this could have been the entry that would have validated the continued existence of the LEGO series. Instead,?LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game rests on its simplistic laurels and fails to do anything special with the series and its inexhaustible source material, becoming just another ho-hum entry with nothing new to offer gamers of any age.

Parents and children will still find plenty to love as they play through the classic story together, reliving moments from all three films that forever live in our hearts. But beyond that demographic, it?s hard to recommend that fans of the Fellowship return to Middle Earth when it?s been done better so many times before. Rebuilding one of the most beloved fantasy worlds out of LEGO blocks isn?t a good enough reason to play through the familiar story once again.

This review is based on a copy of the game that we were provided with.
