Updated at 8:19 a.m. ET: TUNIS, Tunisia - A leader of radical Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia was sentenced to one year in prison on Wednesday for inciting an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tunis last month in which four people were killed.

The conviction of Abu Ayub was the first in connection with the attack - launched to protest against an anti-Islamic film made in California. The United States has been urging authorities to jail those responsible.

"The judge decided to jail him on charges of inciting violence ... This decision is unfair ... we will go to appeal," said Rafik Ghak, a lawyer for Abu Ayub.

The authorities arrested 144 people, including two prominent leaders of Ansar al-Sharia after the embassy attack. Saif-Allah Benahssine, the leader of the group, has urged the government to release them.

Benahssine on Tuesday accused the country's government of being a puppet of the United States and un-Islamic.

The United States this month requested Tunisia bring the embassy attackers to trial, pledging to continue its support for the democratic transition in Tunisia.

Meanwhile, the Tunisian government confirmed Wednesday that it has arrested a 28-year-old Tunisian reportedly linked to the U.S. Consulate attack in Libya.

A man is being held by Tunisian authorities as a "person of interest" in the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

Tunisian Interior Ministry spokesman Tarrouch Khaled said that Ali Harzi was in custody in Tunis. Khaled told the The Associated Press "his case is in the hands of justice." He did not elaborate.

However, Harzi's lawyer told NBC News that his client was innocent. Oulad Ali Anwar said Harzi was working in Benghazi as a house painter at the time of the attack?and said he?denied both attending the demonstration at the U.S. Consulate?and belonging to any extremist group.

In Washington, the State Department had no comment. Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the U.S. has been looking into the arrests of two Tunisian men being detained in Turkey reportedly in connection with attacks on a consulate in Libya last month.

Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died in the attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in the Libyan city of Benghazi on Sept. 11.

Sandy hits Bahamas after killing 21 in Caribbean

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy raged through the Bahamas early Friday after leaving 21 people dead across the Caribbean, following a path that could see it blend with a winter storm and reach the U.S. East Coast as a super-storm next week.

Sandy knocked out power, flooded roads and cut off islands in the storm-hardened Bahamas as it swirled past Cat Island and Eleuthera, but authorities reported no deaths in the scattered archipelago.

"Generally people are realizing it is serious," said Caroline Turnquest, head of the Red Cross in the Bahamas, who said 20 shelters were opened on the main island of New Providence.

Sandy, which weakened to a category 1 hurricane Thursday night, caused havoc in Cuba early in the day, killing 11 people in eastern Santiago and Guantanamo provinces as its howling winds and rain toppled houses and ripped off roofs. Authorities said it was Cuba's deadliest storm since July 2005, when category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed 16 people and caused $2.4 billion in damage.

Sandy also killed one person while crossing Jamaica on Wednesday and 10 in Haiti, where heavy rains from the storm's outer bands caused flooding in the impoverished and deforested country.

Early Friday, the hurricane's center was about 145 miles (235 kilometers) east-southeast of Freeport, Bahamas. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) and was moving north-northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).

Forecasters warned that Sandy will likely mix with a winter storm to create a monster storm in the eastern U.S. next week whose effects will be felt along the entire Atlantic Coast from Florida to Maine and inland to Ohio.

Sandy, which crossed Cuba and reached the Bahamas as a category 2 hurricane, was expected to maintain its category 1 storm status for the next few days.

In the Bahamas, power was out on Acklins Island and most roads there were flooded, government administrator Berkeley Williams said.

On Ragged Island in the southern Bahamas, the lone school was flooded.

"We have holes in roofs, lost shingles and power lines are down," said Charlene Bain, local Red Cross president. "But nobody lost a life, that's the important thing."

Steven Russell, an emergency management official in Nassau, said docks on the western side of Great Inagua island had been destroyed and the roof of a government building was partially ripped off.

Sooner Halvorson, a 36-year-old hotel owner from Colorado who recently moved to the Bahamas, said she and her husband, Matt, expected to ride out the storm with their two young children, three cats, two dogs and a goat at their Cat Island resort.

"We brought all of our animals inside," she said, though she added that a horse stayed outside. "She's a 40-year-old horse from the island. She's been through tons of hurricanes."

On Great Exuma island, guest house operator Veronica Marshall supplied her only customer with a flashlight and some food before Sandy bore down. She said she was confident that she and her business would make it through intact.

"I'm 73 years old and I've weathered many storms," she said.

Tropical storm conditions were possible for Florida's southeastern coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to churn through the central and northwest Bahamas by Friday afternoon and then head northward off the U.S. coast.

With storm conditions projected to hit New Jersey with tropical storm-force winds Tuesday, there was a 90 percent chance that most of the U.S. East Coast would get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday, U.S. forecaster Jim Cisco said.

In an announcement at the end of Cuba's Thursday night newscast, Cuban authorities said the island's 11 dead included a 4-month-old boy who was crushed when his home collapsed and an 84-year-old man in Santiago province.

Santiago, Cuba's second largest city near the eastern tip of the island, was spared the worst of the storm, which also slammed the provinces of Granma, Holguin and Las Tunas.

There were no reports of injuries at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, but there were downed trees and power lines, said Kelly Wirfel, a base spokeswoman. Officials canceled a military tribunal session scheduled for Thursday for the prisoner charged in the 2000 attack on the Navy destroyer USS Cole.

In Haiti, Joseph Edgard Celestin, a spokesman for the civil protection office, said the country's death toll stood at nine, including three people who died while trying to cross storm-swollen rivers in southwestern Haiti. He did not provide specifics of how other people died.

Officials reported flooding across Haiti, where many of the 370,000 people still displaced by the devastating 2010 earthquake scrambled for shelter. More than 1,000 people were evacuated from 11 quake settlements, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Sandy was blamed for the death of an elderly man in Jamaica.

Theoretical physicists like to play with very unconventional toys. Manoel Manghi from Toulouse University in France and his colleagues have adopted a seemingly playful approach to examining what happens to a double stranded molecule of DNA when it is stretched to the breaking point, in a study about to be published in EPJ E. Instead of using optical tweezers to stretch DNA as previously done in experimental settings, the authors focused on using a theoretical model to account for the structural deformations of DNA and determine how its mechanical characteristics could explain certain biological processes.

Over fifteen years ago, scientists discovered that DNA undergoes two structural transitions when pulled from both ends. The problem is that in experimental conditions these two transitions can overlap and can therefore be difficult to observe. Instead, Manghi and colleagues relied on a standard mathematical tool referred to as a 'coupled discrete wormlike chain-Ising model' to simulate DNA stretching and match experimental observations.

Thanks to their theoretical approach, the authors confirmed that after overcoming initial resistance to stretching, at a force of around 65 piconewtons (pN) in strength, the DNA stretches to almost twice its original length while also becoming less rigid. They also confirmed the other known structural transition occurring at around 135 pN. Although the critical forces of both transitions depend on the DNA sequence, they found it is the second one that most depends on it.

Beyond 135pN, DNA strands start peeling apart into single stranded DNAs that are similar to those obtained when DNA is heated up and undergoes thermal denaturation. This model thus bridges the gap between force-induced mechanical stretching and thermal denaturation and could potentially help understand how DNA performs its biological functions such as interaction with proteins and how it is packaged, say, in viruses.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? The circus came to Gaza on Friday, accompanied by blaring music, juggling clowns and fire blowers ? but getting it there required its own high-wire act.

No women performers were included for fear of offending conservative Palestinians and the Gaza Strip's militant Hamas rulers, and the circus' lone lion and tiger were left behind because of the high cost of transporting them legally into Gaza.

The Egyptian National Circus put on its first show of a month-long visit to the impoverished coastal territory on Friday, a sign of warmer relations between Hamas and post-revolution Egypt, which is governed by the Islamic group's ideological parent, the Muslim Brotherhood.

Although it's not state-sponsored, the Egyptian circus could only come because the country's government loosened restrictions on the flow of passengers in and out of Gaza. More foreigners now enter Gaza, including the ruler of the resource-rich Gulf state Qatar earlier this week.

Once in Gaza, the Egyptians' faced an unusual situation ? most Palestinians here don't know what a circus is.

"I think it's going to be really surprising for most people," said Riwa Awwad, 19, ahead of the opening night.

"Gazans are famous for not liking anything and I think they'll do the impossible to entertain us," said Awwad, who came with her extended family to the fairground on Friday.

In an ironic twist, the cheery circus with its flashing lights was held on the grounds of a notorious security prison that was destroyed during an Israeli offensive four years ago.

For the Gazans fortunate enough to see the opening show, it was a welcome relief from conflict and despair. The fairgrounds were packed with excited children in new cloths, women in glittery headscarves, others in black face veils, and men in suits and freshly pressed shirts. Families snacked on pumpkin seeds.

They hollered and cheered as a tight-rope walker wiggled his hips and belly-danced on a thread suspended above the ground. A performer hurled silver knives around volunteers. A red-clad fire blower shot whooshing, yellow licks of flame out of his mouth. Two clowns dressed in yellow-and-blue bumbled and fumbled as they tried to juggle, delighting children.

It took months to arrange the visit to the impoverished territory, where 1.6 million people live in a 25 mile-long sliver wedged between Israel and Egypt and face a punishing blockade imposed after Hamas seized control in 2007.

Aside from a circus' brief visit in the 1990s, there's never been anything like it since Israel captured the strip from Egypt in 1967. Israeli forces and settlers withdrew in 2005.

Businessman Mohammed Faris said he remembered seeing the circus under Egyptian rule in the 1950s, when Gaza was still a liberal place with casinos and bars. He said he recalled as a child seeing men walking on nails and female acrobats flying across stage.

"It was men and women - pretty women," he said.

Not this time around.

Organizer Mohammed Silmi said female performers had to stay behind because the circus was worried that leaping ladies in tights would offend Gazans.

He said Hamas didn't explicitly ban women but he was asked to abide by Gaza's "traditions" when he petitioned to get the circus to come.

In practice, the circus wiggled a little around the no-women rule. At one point a man in drag, sporting a brown wig and red dress, sang and danced with Bunduk the clown.

After Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, Israel and Egypt imposed a blockade that aimed to weaken the militants who seek Israel's destruction.

Under international pressure, it was loosened after Israel raided a blockade-defying boat and killing nine Turkish activists aboard in 2009. Key restrictions still remain on exports and importing raw materials.

All the circus equipment came through the Rafah border crossing, but expensive fees and cumbersome paperwork kept the circus from bringing lions, tigers and horses across the border.

Gaza's makeshift zoos and other merchants often bypass that problem by hauling animals through smuggling tunnels linking the territory to Egypt. In one famous scene captured on film, Gazans used a crane to lift a camel over the border fence as the animal twitched in the air in agony.

Animal welfare aside, Gaza's main zoo recently turned to improvised taxidermy to keep its deceased animals on exhibit.

The area also continues to be violent. As circus technicians were setting up their tent earlier this week, Palestinian militants were fighting Israeli forces in tit-for-tat rounds of rocket fire and retaliatory airstrikes.

Nexus 4 pre-order page goes live early, UK launch due Oct. 30

UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has prematurely opened up its Nexus 4 pre-order page, laying bare all the details of the next Nexus smartphone from Google and LG. In addition to confirming already-leaked details, the CPW listing reveals the presence of "Android 4.2 Jelly Bean" an "amazing 360-degree camera" and Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The phone is listed with 8GB of storage, so there appears to be no sign of the 16GB model just yet.

Price-wise, the Nexus 4 is shown as available for free on Vodafone and O2 contracts starting at £31 per month. No SIM-free price is listed, unfortunately.

Interestingly, Carphone Warehouse says to "pre-order now for delivery on the 30th October," suggesting the Nexus 4 could launch at retail immediately after the Oct. 29 announcement event.

Mobile marketing firm () said today that its partner in Mexico has been chosen by telecom operator Telmex to create a marketing campaign for cell phone and tablet users. ??

Telmex is owned by Fortune 500 company America Movil, the largest telecommunications company in Mexico.?

The company owns around 90 per cent of the telephone lines in Mexico City and currently has revenue in of more than US$12 billion annually. ?It also provides communication services throughout Latin and South America. ?

The marketing campaign will use Snipp technology to create a contest for users to enter with their cell phones. ?

Snipp's ?Mobilize Me? platform supports several input mechanisms for mobilizing marketing campaigns for companies, including text message, QR codes, tags and Snapp tags.

Already, the business, which was established in 2007, has provided its services to several Fortune 500 companies and other major brands, advertising agencies and publishers, including Wal-Mart (), ESPN, Time Inc, Ford (), Nike (), Wendy's (NASDAQ:WEN) and Campbell Soup ().?

Back in May, Snipp inked a deal to license its Mobilize Me platform to digital marketing agency Virket S.A., providing mobile marketing services in the Mexican market together on an exclusive basis.?

The contest for Telmex will be an "augmented reality video game experience", Snipp said, complemented with Telmex branded and messaging.?

Users will be able to enter the contest through their cell phone by simply following instructions provided at all Telmex retail outlets and phone kiosks across Mexico City.?

The campaign is expected to launch in early December to tie into Christmas promotions offered by Telmex.

?We are very excited to launch our newest technology, an augmented reality solution, with Telmex," said Snipp CEO, Atul Sabharwal.

"This solution provides brands with a groundbreaking new technology that can engage customers by the one item they have with them at all times ? their cell phones or tablets.?

"Marketing in Mexico is focusing more and more on mobile solutions, as is the rest of the world, and expect to capture significant market share as evidenced by our ability to win business from a big established player like Telmex. ?

Indeed, the partnership with VirKet has proved lucrative for Snipp, as earlier this month, they announced a deal with Mexican yellow pages publisher, ?Secci?n Amarilla, to develop mobile solutions exclusively for Secci?n Amarilla clients.

CEO of VirKet, Pedro Quinza?os Cancino, added: "This [Telmex] campaign puts us on the cutting edge of mobile marketing technology in Mexico with Snipp.?

"We continue to effectively merge offline and online marketing solutions together across a range of industries in Mexico and see our business and interest in mobile solutions growing at a fast pace.??

The two companies are also aiming to provide their mobile solutions to Sanborns, the retail arm that oversees 180 Sanborns Stores, 90 Stores, 60 Mixup Stores, 30 iShop Stores and 3 Fifth Avenue Stores in Mexico.?

In addition, the parties are working on deploying a range of mobile-enabled business models for the Mexican market in 2013-14 for various clients.

China's Luxury-Property Bust Stings J.P. Morgan

A luxury apartment building in the city of Dalian is being auctioned.

SHANGHAI?A luxury apartment building that is one of the most visible casualties of China's high-end property bust is up for auction in the northeast city of Dalian, after a bank foreclosed on the property.

The 48-floor Park Central was owned by a fund run by J.P. Morgan Asset Management, which invested $80 million in the property. But the asset manager lost the property when U.K.-based lender Standard Chartered PLC, which provided the majority of a roughly $140 million loan, foreclosed over the summer after sluggish sales put it in violation of loan covenants, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The loss, which came after China tightened rules on buying luxury apartments, shows how exposed some European and U.S. investors are to Chinese real estate. Several potential investors have been offered the property, but no deal has been reached, the people said.

Standard Chartered and J.P. Morgan Asset Management, a unit of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., declined to comment.

China recently has shown signs of revival in its property market, yet problems remain evident. Property developers such as Greentown China Holdings Ltd. and SPG Land Holdings Ltd. that had focused on high-end homes, have been offloading some of their assets to other developers as cash flow tightened due to government moves to cool the property market. In June, debt-laden Greentown China raised $657 million by selling stock and issuing convertible bonds to shareholder Wharf (Holdings) Ltd.

The government moved in 2010 to slow construction of luxury housing? through credit curbs, limits on buying multiple properties and higher down-payment requirements?and sought to push developers toward building for first-time buyers and those upgrading to bigger homes.

Like upwardly mobile Chinese, foreign investors have preferred luxury properties in China due to the higher margins they can fetch compared with the mass-market, cookie-cutter apartments.

But skeptics warn that it will take years for the market to absorb an oversupply of fancy apartments and villas, many left empty by their investor buyers, and "ghost cities" of unoccupied blocks.

"Around three to four years ago you could already see that the government was clamping down on the luxury sector, but some thought that the government was going to leave the top-tier residential sector untouched since it had nothing to do with the mass market. That was misguided," said one person with knowledge of the matter.

• April 2010: China raises down payment on first home purchases for homes larger than 90 square meters (968 square feet) to 30% from 20%, and those for second homes to 50% from 40%.
• Sept. 2010: Down payment on all first-time home purchases raised to 30%, and discount banks could offer on mortgage rates for first-time home buyers is reduced . Loans to customers purchasing their third or subsequent homes prohibited.
• Jan. 2011: China raises down payment for second homes to 60% from 50%. Shanghai and Chongqing start property tax trials.
• 2011-2012: Various cities start to implement bans on multiple home purchases, with Beijing being one of the first few cities to limit the number of homes each family can buy.
• August: 2012: China sends inspection teams across 16 cities and provinces to check on how property curbs were implemented.

The overall level of foreclosure activity in China is unclear. There is little information in the country regarding the volume of distressed real-estate assets.

But high-end residential projects such as Park Central, one of the top buildings in seaside Dalian, have been among the hardest hit since China launched its property tightening campaign.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management took over Park Central during its construction even as the market was showing signs of froth. The company had started a $600 million Greater China property fund in 2008 and has invested in projects across the country, including in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing. Its projects elsewhere in China don't appear to be in distress, the people said.

The units in Park Central haven't sold well since they went on the market in September 2011. In addition to the government tightening measures, the sales weakness was partly because the units were too big and costly, according to the people with knowledge of the matter and real-estate agents in the city.

"Although it's in a great location, the units were too large and it's difficult to split them into smaller units," said one of the people.

Standard Chartered and Bank of East Asia Ltd. extended a loan of approximately $140 million to J.P. Morgan Asset Management for the project, one of the people said. Standard Chartered foreclosed on the property after J.P. Morgan breached some loan covenants due to poor sales. Deloitte & Touche Inc. has been appointed as the receiver of the project, the same person said. Bank of East Asia and Deloitte declined to comment.

CBRE Group, the broker hired to market Park Central, is working with Standard Chartered to seek potential buyers, the people said.

The project offers 270 one- to four-bedroom units that are between 110 and 519 square meters each.

According to local property agency websites, at the time of its launch, the project carried asking prices of around 35,000 yuan ($5,595) per square meter. Calls to the project's sales office went unanswered and brokers in the city said there have been no signs of sales activity in the project for a number of months now.

Other housing projects nearby have selling prices of around 19,000 yuan per square meter.

A few private-equity players have submitted nonbinding bids for the distressed asset, and some of the bids have exceeded one billion yuan, one of the people said, without giving details.

Margaret Atwood and co-writer Naomi Alderman had fun giving each other literary problems to resolve along the way.

OTTAWA ? Just in time for Halloween, Canada?s most decorated literary doyenne ? Margaret Atwood ? has co-written a serialized zombie novel with a promising British author that will be posted chapter by chapter on the Canadian-based story-sharing website Wattpad.

Atwood, the Booker- and Giller-prizewinning author of such renowned works as The Blind Assassin, Oryx and Crake and Alias Grace, was scheduled to upload the first chapter of the new comic-horror novel ? titled The Happy Zombie Sunrise Home and co-written by 37-year-old U.K. writer Naomi Alderman ? on Wednesday to www.wattpad.com.

Alderman?s first chapter and Atwood?s second instalment are also expected to be available Wednesday, with other chapters to appear weekly until early January.

In an excerpt of the story made available to Postmedia News, Atwood?s narrator sets the scene of an apparent zombie infestation in Toronto, where the risen undead roam about the city in search of living humans to devour.

(Note to Canada: Let the metaphorical interpretations of Hogtown?s night of the living dead pour forth.) ?I for one am not about to allow my arm be chewed off just because another person ? another former person ? is feeling like a snack,? Atwood?s unfazed, rhubarb-growing, zombie-killing retiree, Clio, a cucumber-cool, garden-tool-wielding resident of upscale Rosedale, states.

Although Atwood has made celebrated and chilling forays into the world of science fiction ? or what she has preferred to label ?speculative fiction? ? with novels such as The Handmaid?s Tale, her embrace of pop culture?s ongoing fascination with zombies (in films such as Dawn/Shaun/Juan of the Dead, and in annual, pre-Halloween corpse parades in towns and cities everywhere) may come as a surprise to her millions of fans in Canada and around the world.

But as a writer who gained national prominence in 1969 with a first novel titled The Edible Woman, the 72-year-old Atwood has evidently been intrigued by cannibalism ? at least on a figurative level ? for decades.

?We are so proud that Margaret and Naomi chose Wattpad as a way to quickly and easily share this work with a global audience of millions,? Wattpad CEO Allen Lau, the Canadian high-tech entrepreneur who launched the storytelling website in 2006, said in announcing the authors? new zombie novel.

?They both understand the new patterns of engagement that are happening around serially published stories,? he added.

?The majority of people on Wattpad are reading on their mobile phones, so we believe there is a great fit between serialization and today?s mobile-first, social networked culture. The chapter-by-chapter model is something that is helping many writers connect with readers to find success.?

The two writers embarked on the zombie project after Atwood selected Alderman ? who already has several published works ? as her apprentice wordsmith through the Rolex Mentor and Prot?g? Arts Initiative, described as ?an international program that pairs established artists with emerging artists in the fields of literature, architecture, dance, film, music, theatre, and visual arts for a year of creative collaboration.?

In a statement about the zombie tale issued by Wattpad, the two writers are said to have enjoyed ?setting each other up? by ending instalments in a way that requires the other author to ?write her way out of an emotionally heavy scene? or ? in one case of retaliation by Alderman ? ?leaving frightful problems for Atwood to solve? following an ?insanely action-packed? sequence of events.

?The whole process kept me on my toes; it was a lot of fun,? Atwood said in a statement. ?We shared interests in technology, the history of religion, and little-known monsters.?

Alderman acknowledged that ?it was pretty daunting to know that my words would be sitting next to those of my personal writing hero. But once I managed to swallow that ? like a zombie chewing on delicious brains ? it became gleefully joyful to think of some interesting challenges and new wrinkles on what we?d done already.?

This year, Atwood agreed to lend her name to a new online poetry prize ? ?The Attys? ? sponsored by Wattpad, which claims a global community of about 10 million users.

Atwood, as part of an online collection titled Thriller Suite, has posted original poems of her own at the Wattpad website. And she has promoted the social media tool for writers as an important new incubator of literary talent.

Atwood told Postmedia News in August that Wattpad ?allows people in developing countries who may have no books, no libraries, no schools and no infrastructure ? but who may have a cellphone ? to have access to both reading and writing. And it allows early writers to practise their skills with a sympathetic audience.?

Atwood, who won the 1966 Governor General?s Award for her poetry collection The Circle Game, has a track record of embracing new publishing-related technologies.

She invented a device called the Long Pen to allow her to conduct virtual book signings around the world. She was also an early adapter to Twitter and recently published the short story I?m Starved For You as a $2.99 e-book with a U.S.-based digital publisher.

Obama or Romney? Let your face vote in our online poll

The US presidential election is just two weeks away, and the official polls are telling a confusing story. Since the first presidential debate on 3 October, the national polls have tilted toward challenger Mitt Romney, while state-by-state figures show a slight lead for President Barack Obama.

But polls are notoriously fickle.

So instead of polling, New Scientist is teaming up with emotional computing company Affectiva to gauge readers' emotional reaction to last night's debate in Boca Raton, Florida - the third and final between Obama and Romney.

Here's how it will work. New Scientist staff have selected several video clips that Affectiva has posted to its website. You can go there now and watch the clips while Affectiva records your emotional reaction in real time (you'll need a web cam for this).

Behind the scenes, Affectiva's Affdex software, based on tools developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tracks the texture, shape and subtle movement of facial features such as mouth and eyebrows to recognise happiness, sadness, boredom, disgust or contempt.

The idea is to get an in-depth look at people's reactions to the debate that goes beyond typical polling.

"Most polls would not be able to ask which things really resonated and which didn't," says Avril England of Affectiva, based in Waltham, Massachusetts. "With this scene-by-scene analysis, we'll be able to get that very specific response. If you really watch people through the whole debate, you can get unprecedented insight into their real reactions."

Will it work? How well do people's facial expressions line up with what they say they felt? Does it correlate with how they vote?

You can help find out. Whether or not you watched last night's debate, you can watch the clips here. Affectiva will then compile the results and we will run a follow-up post analysing the data in time for the election, which is scheduled Tuesday, 6 November.

Trendy jacket maker Canada Goose claims win in knockoff battle

Trendy winter jacket maker Canada Goose Inc. is touting what it says is a landmark victory in its stepped-up battle against cheap knockoffs.

The Canadian company ? known for its super-warm, stylish parkas with coyote-fur-trimmed hoods ? says the District Court of Stockholm has found five Swedish nationals guilty of felony fraud, trademark infringement and customs offences in a sophisticated racket selling fake Canada Goose jackets.

The court sentenced two of the defendants to time in prison and awarded Canada Goose 701,000 SEK ($105,000 Canadian) in damages.

Bought in Thailand and repackaged in Sweden, the thousands of fakes were of poor quality in fabric and detailing and used raccoon dog fur instead of coyote, the company said in a news release.

A number of aliases and a false Swedish business name were used by the defendants, says Canada Goose, which has been leading a high-profile campaign against counterfeiting over the past several years after seeing a proliferation of fake jackets using its brand name and styles.

The scheme?s mastermind was arrested in Bangkok in May, 2012, and extradited to Sweden for trial.

?This is a clear victory in protecting intellectual property and consumers, and its sends a strong message that counterfeiters will not be tolerated,? Canada Goose vice-president of global marketing Kevin Spreekmeester, said in a statement.

Among materials used in imitation Canada Goose jackets are feather mulch and other fillers which are often coated in bacteria, fungus, mildew and even feces, says the company.

The fakes also don?t use real down or fur and don?t provide the warmth and protection in extreme cold, presenting a threat to unwitting consumers, it said.

Sweden?s District Court said in its judgment that an estimated 10 per cent of all goods sold in the European Union are counterfeit.

Canada Goose?s fight against fakes includes a primer on counterfeiting on its website that asks consumers who suspect they may be the victims of fraud to contact the RCMP?s anti-fraud centre.

Canada Goose jackets sell for about $800, while illegal copies go for much less.

The growing popularity of online shopping has fueled the rise of counterfeiting, making it easy to set up websites using fake addresses.

The global economic downturn has also helped boost the popularity of fake high-end branded products.

Techniques Canada Goose uses to fight counterfeiting include sewing holograms into the seams of its parkas.

The company ? founded in 1957 by Sam Tick as a manufacturer of extreme weather clothing and expedition gear -- says counterfeiting has bumped up its cost of doing business by six figures every year.

Joe S?dow, Canada Goose?s vice-president of European sales, said in an interview that the Swedish case goes back a couple years, when he started getting e-mails from people asking if jackets being sold as authentic Canada Goose items might not be the real deal, given that they were retailing for less than the wholesale price.

After a little sleuthing, Mr. Sudow says he managed to track down one of the perpetrators, who told him he got the jackets at a ?going-out-of-business sale? in France. ?I knew there was no close-out sale in France,? said Mr. Sudow.

That led to close collaboration with Swedish police and tax and customs authorities, he said.

?We chased this guy for many years,? he said.

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Flavor Flav intends to fight criminal charges and seek reconciliation with his longtime fiancee after an argument led to his arrest last week, the entertainer's lawyer said Monday.

The 53-year-old former rap, hip-hop and reality TV star, whose legal name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., didn't appear in person during a hearing before Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa.

Drayton's attorney Tony Abbatangelo told The Associated Press his client plans to plead not guilty to allegations that he pushed his girlfriend of eight years to the floor and wielded two knives as he chased and threatened the woman's 17-year-old son during an argument Wednesday at their home in Las Vegas.

Drayton is charged with felony assault and misdemeanor domestic battery. He could face up to six years in prison if convicted of the assault charge and six months in jail on the domestic battery charge.

"They've been together a long time, and they want to work this out," Abbatangelo said. "We want what's best for the family."

Elizabeth Trujillo, 39, told police her earring was ripped out during the incident that she said stemmed from an argument over infidelity. The teen wasn't injured.

Trujillo told police her son intervened after Drayton grabbed her and twice threw her to the ground.

The teen wrestled with Drayton before Drayton grabbed two large knives and chased him through the living room to an upstairs bedroom, where Drayton was accused of kicking in the door and threatening the teen while still holding both knives, according to a police report.

Drayton told the arresting officer he scuffled with Trujillo and her son but denied chasing or threatening the teen, the report states.

Drayton's public persona includes wearing an oversized clock on his chest. He was a member of the rap group Public Enemy in the 1980s and '90s, and later starred in reality TV series.

He has a criminal history that includes a month in jail for assaulting his then-girlfriend in 1991, and three months in prison for shooting at a neighbor in New York in 1993.

The judge set a Nov. 20 date for an evidence hearing.

Morgan Stanley shares rise on higher earnings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Morgan Stanley reported higher revenue and net income for its third quarter Thursday thanks to gains in its bonds and asset management businesses.

Excluding an accounting charge, the bank earned $535 million for common shareholders in July to September, up from $39 million a year ago.

Revenue rose 18 percent to $7.6 billion after excluding the charge. That beat the $6.4 billion that analysts were expecting, according to FactSet.

In a statement, CEO James Gorman said the results showed the bank's "balanced, strategically focused" game plan. He said he was "confident in our potential to enhance profitability and increase value for our shareholders in the quarters ahead."

If the accounting charge is included, the bank lost $1 billion in the quarter versus income of $2.2 billion in the same period a year ago, and revenue fell 46 percent to $5.3 billion.

The charge was related to a controversial accounting rule that governs how banks value their debt. When the value of a bank's debt rises, it has to take a write-down because, theoretically, it would have to pay more to buy back its debt on the open market. The rule has been criticized as confusing, because it penalizes banks when their value to investors is actually rising. The rule could be phased out as early as next year.

Gorman has been moving the bank into more consumer-focused activities, notably with its expansion of the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney retail brokerage.

Revenue rose in most areas where the bank does business. It tripled in the asset management unit, which helps sophisticated clients ? mostly institutions ? invest in private equity, real estate and other investments. The bank noted gains in real estate investing, and said that clients were putting more money into some of its funds.

Revenue rose about 21 percent in the investment bank. Those results showed how customers were deciding how to invest: favoring bonds over stocks. Revenue from trading stocks on behalf of clients fell, but revenue from trading bonds and commodities on behalf of clients rose.

The investment bank also helps businesses raise money on the open market, go public, and make decisions about strategy. Morgan Stanley did less business in advising companies. It also brought in less money from underwriting stock offerings. But it more than doubled its revenue from underwriting bonds.

Gorman said clients "have re-engaged after the uncertainty of the rating review in the previous quarter." In June, the ratings agency Moody's had knocked down its rating of Morgan Stanley's debt.

This quarter brought a coup for Morgan Stanley when it muscled through negotiations with Citigroup to buy up the rest of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, the retail brokerage that it jointly owns with Citi.

Citi agreed to sell the rest of its stake to Morgan Stanley, but it got far less money than it wanted. As a result Citi had to take a $4.7 billion write-down when it announced its own third-quarter earnings on Monday.

Morgan Stanley wants to expand its retail brokerage arm which, while not as glamorous as higher-risk businesses, does provide a steady source of revenue.

The bank makes money there largely through charging fees when it helps customers manage their money. Riskier bank activities, like trading for its own account, can offer the opportunity for bigger profits. But that type of trading is being stamped out by new regulations. It also carries the risk that banks can miscalculate and suffer huge losses.

Gorman said in a statement that the bank is "beginning to unlock the full potential" of the retail brokerage business.

Morgan Stanley has also been slashing jobs and expenses to cushion itself against the uncertain economy. It shed about 4,500 jobs over the year, or about 7 percent of its work force. It spent more on paying its employees, though. Compensation and benefits expense rose 8 percent to $3.9 billion.

The stock rose 2 percent, or 39 cents, to $18.85 in pre-market trading. Stocks for the other major banks were mostly flat.
