Omnicom, Publicis to combine into biggest ad firm

PARIS (AP) ? Omnicom Group Inc. and Publicis Groupe SA say they are combining in a "merger of equals" that will create the world's largest advertising firm, one worth more than $35 billion.

The combined company will be called Publicis Omnicom Group and be jointly led by Omnicom CEO John Wren and Publicis CEO Maurice Levy as co-chief executives. The move is designed to bolster the companies' focus on growing Asian and Latin American markets such as China and Brazil, where they each have ramped up operations to counter lackluster growth in weak European markets.

But although a combined firm will allow for more pricing power in general, the decrease in competition could present regulatory hurdles in the U.S. and Europe. Client conflicts also could be an issue, as rivals such as Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo, McDonald's, Yum Brands' Taco Bell, Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble now find themselves under the same umbrella.

Rich Tullo, an analyst at Albert Fried & Co. in New York, predicted pushback from regulators in both the U.S. and France. The U.S. could be wary of one company controlling such a large portion of the market, he said, while in France, authorities might not take warmly to any Americanization of a company that is a bright spot in the bruised French economy.

Tullo also questioned whether the combined company could live up to promises like the $500 million in cost savings touted with the announcement, given Europe's shaky financial condition. "That sounds like financial alchemy, if you ask me," he said.

Omnicom Group Inc., based in New York, owns BBDO Worldwide, DDB Worldwide Communications Group and TBWA Worldwide, among other agencies. Paris-based Publicis Groupe SA runs its namesake agency as well as Leo Burnett Worldwide, Saatchi & Saatchi and DigitasLBi. Their merger creates a company with combined annual revenue of about $23 billion, leapfrogging them over current London-based industry leader WPP PLC.

For the first year, Omnicom Chairman Bruce Crawford will serve as non-executive chairman of the new company. He will be succeeded by Elisabeth Badinter, the current Publicis Groupe chairwoman, and daughter of its founder, for the second year.

Levy is slated to take the non-executive chairman's seat after 30 months, leaving Wren to continue as sole CEO from that point.

Omnicom, which also owns public relations firms such as Fleishman-Hillard, Porter Novelli and Ketchum, reported 2012 profit of nearly $1 billion on revenue of $14.22 billion. Earlier this month, the Madison Avenue giant posted second-quarter earnings that topped analysts' average forecast, though revenue growth of 2 percent fell just short of expectations.

Founded in 1986, Omnicom generates just over half of its revenue from U.S. clients, and about one-quarter from European and British markets combined. The company's stock has risen 31 percent in the last 12 months, recently peaking at $67.43 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Omnicom will benefit from Publicis' strategic shift in the last few years toward digital operations, as the French company beefed up its digital marketing profile with the acquisitions of Digitas, Razorfish, Rosetta, Big Fuel and LBi. Publicis, which had revenue of $8.78 billion in 2012, had targeted generating 75 percent of its revenue in digital and fast-growing countries by 2018, according to a recent investor presentation.

The move gives Publicis, which has faced questions about who will succeed 71-year-old Levy, access to Omnicom's well-regarded senior leadership, said James Dix, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

Analysts said the deal also represents even more consolidation in an industry that is already dominated by just a few players, a fact that might not sit well with U.S. regulators.

If the Omnicom-Publicis combination goes through, the combined company would account for nearly 40 percent of the U.S. ad industry, twice as much as the nearest competitor, WPP, according to Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group in New York.

Wieser said Sunday the deal came as a surprise to many in the industry. Omnicom, he said, has "always been viewed as too large to get any larger."

The combined company will have more than 130,000 employees.

One concern is whether Omnicom and Publicis can strike a harmonious balance of power ? something that can be difficult in mergers of similar-sized companies.

"It's not clear yet who really is in the driver's seat," Wieser said. "That will emerge over time."

The fact that the two firms are based in different countries could also become an issue, Dix said. "You have these fiefdoms that keep people from playing together. One company is based in Paris, one is in New York. Where is the power center?" he said in an interview Saturday.

Dix expects that top executives are comfortable with the structure of the deal, but the adjustment may be more difficult for the next level of executives who run the firms' units.

"Now they have to fit together into a broader organization," Dix said. "If you lose clients or have defections of senior executives then you have something that looked good on paper but didn't quite play out."

The combination has been approved by the boards of both companies, but remains subject to regulatory approval in both the U.S. and Europe, and to a vote by shareholders of both companies. The deal is structured so that the shareholders of Publicis Groupe and Omnicom, after special dividends, will each hold approximately 50 percent of the company.

Publicis Groupe shareholders will receive one new share of Publicis Omnicom Group for each Publicis Groupe share they own, together with a special dividend of 1 euro per share. Omnicom shareholders will receive 0.813 new shares of Publicis Omnicom Group for each Omnicom share they own, plus a special dividend of $2 per share. The new company intends to be listed in Paris and on the New York Stock Exchange.

The combination could have a domino effect on the industry, spurring marriages between other ad giants who might fear they can't compete otherwise, said Michael Corty, an analyst at Chicago-based Morningstar. "Within the ad agency industry, this is potentially an earthquake deal."

Apple-supplier Pegatron violates China workers' rights: China Labor Watch

BEIJING | Mon Jul 29, 2013 3:21am EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - Pegatron Corp, a Taiwanese company that makes Apple Inc products, is violating workers' rights at its Chinese factories in Shanghai and Suzhou, New York-based rights group China Labor Watch said in a report on Monday.

Pegatron, which assembles iPads and iPhones at its China factories, is forcing employees to work unpaid overtime in poor working and living conditions, among other violations of Chinese regulations, China Labor Watch said.

"The Pegatron factories are violating a great number of international and Chinese laws and standards as well as the standards of Apple's own social responsibility code of conduct," it said in the report.

Pegatron said in a statement that it would investigate the matter and would take immediate action to correct any violations of Chinese labor laws and its own code of conduct.

"We strive to make each day at Pegatron better than the last for our employees. They are the heart of our business. That's why we take these allegations very seriously," Pegatron's CEO Jason Cheng said in the statement.

Apple, responding to China Labor Watch's latest report, said it had conducted 15 audits at Pegatron facilities since 2007 that covered more than 130,000 workers to ensure safe and fair working conditions throughout its supply chain.

It has been in touch with China Labor Watch for several months and has fixed some issues raised by the organization, Apple said.

"Their latest report contains claims that are new to us and we will investigate them immediately," Apple said. "If our audits find that workers have been underpaid or denied compensation for any time they've worked, we will require that Pegatron reimburse them in full."

New York-based China Labor Watch said it sent undercover investigators into three Pegatron factories and conducted nearly 200 interviews with workers outside the factories from March to July.

Pegatron's factories in China now employ more than 70,000 workers after it stepped up production of Apple's products as part of the U.S. technology giant's plans to diversify its contract manufacturing partners.

Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, which has also been criticized by labor groups for poor working conditions, now makes most of Apple's top products through its flagship unit, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd.

3 dead when bus carrying teens from church camp crashes on busy thoroughfare in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Fire Department says three people were killed when a bus carrying teens from a church camp crashed on a busy thoroughfare near Interstate 465.

The bus was carrying 40 passengers who are members of Colonial Hill Baptist Church and were returning from camp when the crash happened Saturday afternoon.

Indianapolis Fire Department spokesman Lt. Rita Burris confirms the deaths and says survivors were being taken to area hospitals. Those injured include children and adults.

Some of the victims were taken from the scene by helicopter.

An Indiana Department of Transportation camera showed the bus overturned on its side.

Roads near the scene were closed, and hazmat crews were in the area cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Saturday urged Americans to take time from their "hurried lives" to listen to the heroic stories of Korean War veterans who returned to a country weary of war and deserved a better homecoming.

"Unlike the Second World War, Korea did not galvanize our country. These veterans did not return to parades," Obama said in a speech at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall, making the 60th anniversary of the war's end.

"Unlike Vietnam, Korea did not tear at our country. These veterans did not return to protests. For many Americans tired of war, there was it seemed a desire to forget, to move on," Obama said.

They "deserve better," the president said, adding that on this anniversary, "perhaps the highest tribute we can offer our veterans of Korea is to do what should have been done the day you came home."

Obama appealed to Americans to pause "in our hurried lives" and let these veterans "carry us back to the days of their youth and let us be awed by their shining deeds. Listen closely and hear their story of a generation."

The 1950-1953 war involved North Korean and Chinese troops against U.S.-led United Nations and South Korean forces. It ended on July 27, 1953 ? 60 years ago Saturday ? with the signing of an armistice.

But a formal peace treaty was never signed, leaving the Korean Peninsula in a technical state of war and divided at the 38th parallel between its communist north and democratic south.

At least 2.5 million people were killed in the fighting.

"It perhaps taken longer to see clearly and full the true legacy of your service," Obama told veterans in the crowd.

"Here today, we can say with confidence, that war was no tie, Korea was a victory," with 50 million South Koreans living in freedom and "a vibrant democracy" in stark contrast to dire conditions in the North.

"That is a victory and that is your legacy," Obama said.

In a proclamation declaring Saturday as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, Obama said the anniversary marks the end of the war and the beginning of a long and prosperous peace.

In the six decades since the end of hostilities, Obama said, South Korea has become a close U.S. ally and one of the world's largest economies.

He said the partnership remains "a bedrock of stability" throughout the Pacific region, and gave credit to the U.S. service members who fought all those years ago and to the men and women currently stationed there.

Rising household debt in S'pore worrying: MAS

SINGAPORE: Singapore's central bank said rising household debt in the city-state is worrying, and that it is "important to act now to limit build-up of leverage".

Ravi Menon, managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), said that 5 to 10 per cent "have probably over-leveraged their property purchases".

He said: "Many households could have over-extended themselves, fuelled by low interest rates and stretched loan tenures. The vast majority of mortgage loans in Singapore are on floating rate packages, which means households will face higher monthly repayments when interest rates normalise."

For example, they have total debt service payments at more than 60 per cent of their income.

Mr Menon added that if mortgage rates were to rise by 3 percentage points, the proportion of borrowers at risk could reach 10 to 15 per cent.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mr Menon also said the Singapore economy will "comfortably meet" the growth forecast of 1 to 3 per cent this year.

According to the central bank, "GDP growth should pick up over the course of the year amid an improving external environment".

Snigapore's economy grew 1.3 per cent in 2012.

The MAS said the forecast for headline inflation will be revised down to 2-3 per cent, from 3-4 per cent previously. The core inflation forecast for 2013 remains at 1.5-2.5 per cent.

Mr Menon said that this is the first time in three years that CPI inflation has come down closer to historical trends and within MAS' comfort range.

Headline inflation was elevated at 4.6 per cent last year due to higher residential property rentals and car prices, while core inflation, which excludes accommodation and private road transport, averaged 2.5 per cent in 2012.

The MAS had paid-up capital of S$25 billion as at 31 March 2013, unchanged from the end of the previous financial year, according to its annual report.

The MAS does not hand over any profits to the government during the financial year when there is no accounting profit.

The Singapore central bank made a net loss of S$10.61 billion in fiscal year 2012/13, reversing from the gain of S$2.77 billion in the previous financial year.

The MAS said its good investment returns over the year were more than offset by the strength of the Singapore dollar.

"This is an issue of reporting currency. If we had reported our profit and loss in international currency, it would show a healthy profit," said Mr Menon.

Total assets managed by Singapore-based asset managers were S$1.63 trillion as of the end of last year, 21.5 per cent percent higher year-on-year due to "strong inflows and higher market valuation".?

World awaits first glimpse of royal baby

By Belinda Goldsmith

LONDON (Reuters) - The world was awaiting the first glimpse of Britain's new prince on Tuesday with camera crews poised to photograph Prince William and his wife, Kate, leaving a London hospital with their baby son.

Kate, 31, gave birth to the couple's first child, who is third in line to the British throne, on Monday afternoon, ending weeks of feverish anticipation about the arrival and surprising royal watchers, who were widely expecting a girl.

The baby's name will be announced later but George and James, both traditional royal names, were favoured choices with British bookmakers for the child, who could one day be king.

The popular couple sidestepped tradition by announcing the birth via a press release but were expected to adhere to protocol by giving the public the first sight of the royal baby on the steps as they leave St. Mary's Hospital in west London.

"All we will probably see is a glimpse of the top of the baby's head but they will stick to this tradition," said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine.

"After that we won't see them for some time. Having a baby is a very private moment and they are a private couple so the next time we see the baby will be the official photo and that could be weeks."

Kensington Palace announced the arrival of a boy weighing 8 lbs 6 oz (3.8 kg) at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, four hours after his birth, saying Kate and her child were doing well and would remain in hospital overnight. Prince William was with them.

Their son is third in line to the throne after grandfather Prince Charles and father Prince William, 31, and pushes the fun-loving Prince Harry, William's brother, into fourth place.

BOOST FOR BRITAIN

Congratulations flooded in from all over the world after the announcement of the birth, which was followed moment-by-moment by the world media as well as the British press with the excitement seen as a boost for Britons facing economic austerity.

British tabloid newspaper The Sun temporarily renamed itself The Son in honour of the baby while the left-leaning Guardian newspaper provided readers of its website with a "Republican" button so that they could filter out the barrage of royal news if they wanted.

The birth fuels a new wave of popularity for the House of Windsor led by the younger royals, William and Harry, who were both born to the late Princess Diana at St. Mary's Hospital.

Support for the royals dipped after Diana's death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, a year after her divorce from Prince Charles, as the royals were accused of being out of touch with modern Britain in the way they handled the death of the popular princess.

But last year's celebrations of Queen Elizabeth's 60th year on the throne showed the affection with which she is held by most of the population despite a small Republican movement.

Hordes of TV crews and photographers, and royal fans wrapped in Union Jacks, remained camped outside the hospital overnight Monday, waiting for the first photo of the baby, who will be called the Prince of Cambridge.

Prince William and Kate, who met when they were students at St. Andrews University in Scotland about 10 years ago, have officially been known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge since their sumptuous royal wedding in April 2011.

Tourists in London were revelling in the celebrations that top a run of British sporting victories and an unusual heatwave.

"For me it's a wonderful, historic event. You spend a lot of time studying these things. To actually get to be here to witness one is tremendous," said George Boudreau, 48, a history professor from Philadelphia, outside Buckingham Palace.

Recari, Creamer share lead through 54 at Marathon

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) ? The Marathon Classic isn't a match-play tournament.

Except for maybe this year.

Beatriz Recari birdied the two closing par 5s to catch Paula Creamer atop the leaderboard through 54 holes Saturday, setting up a head-to-head battle between players who are three shots clear of the field.

Recari, a 26-year-old Spaniard who has won twice on the LPGA Tour, conceded that it's hard not to get caught up in a two-person competition.

"Definitely, it's easier because you're playing with the player closest to you in score," she said. "You still have to do your best. You can't control what she does, so you always have to stay focused on what you're doing."

They were at 12-under 201 after each shooting 4-under 67.

The showdown could be a preview. Recari is expected to make the European team for the Solheim Cup next month ? where match play rules ? and Creamer is one of the mainstays of the American side.

Creamer, who won in 2008 when the tournament was known as the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic, led throughout the round by as many as two shots before Recari's late surge at Highland Meadows.

She was pleased to find herself being the hunted instead of the hunter.

"I love this feeling," said Creamer, who has nine wins but none since the 2010 U.S. Women's Open. "I haven't felt it for a while. I've normally been chasing the leaders, but this is great. This is right where I wanted to be."

The last time she played in the same group with Recari, it was Recari who had the edge. In the third round of the Kia Classic in March in California, Recari shot a 69 when paired in the last grouping with Creamer, who had a 71. Recari, who had won the CVS last year, ended up winning in a playoff with I.K. Kim. Creamer faded to a tie for 17th.

"She's a great player," Recari said. "It's always great to play with her."

Creamer, who set the tournament record with a first-round 60 in her victory lap five years ago, is expecting a battle.

"She's steady. She hits a lot of fairways and greens and gives herself a lot of opportunities to make birdies," she said about Recari. "At the same time, there are so many players out there that you have to kind of be aware of. But she's definitely going to be fighting until the end."

There are plenty of potential challengers, even though several of the biggest names ? including world No. 1 Inbee Park, defending champ So Yeon Ryu and top amateur Lydia Ko all fell back into the pack.

Rising American teen Lexi Thompson had a 67 and, along with Jacqui Concolino and Japan's Chie Arimura, was three shots back.

"I've been working on trusting my targets ? picking out a target and just visualizing my shot," Thompson said. "That's what I've been doing every shot. I've committed pretty good to them."

Concolino, whose career-best tie for 11th came at the event last year, had a 69. She has revived her desire to play since taking time off from competitive golf after graduating from Vanderbilt in 2009.

"I just got a little burnt out in college and needed some time to myself," she said of her lengthy hiatus. "Ever since I was 13, I've been doing everything for golf, golf, golf. I never really had time to enjoy friends and family how you would want to. So that's what I did for a year and a half, two years, and started to get back on track."

Arimura, fourth in the LPGA's rookie standings, three-putted the final hole for bogey and a 68.

Jennifer Johnson (66), Chella Choi (66) and Jodi Ewart Shadoff (68) were at 205.

Park has been the talk of the tour this year, with six victories including wins in all three of the major championships. She'll go for four in a row when the tour returns to action in two weeks at the Women's British Open at St. Andrew's.

But after winning three in a row and with a solid finish last week, she sagged to a 73 that left her tied for 23rd. She double-bogeyed the first hole after hitting her drive into a fairway bunker and never recovered.

That wasn't the worst of it.

"I just putted really bad today," she said, after dropping from sole possession of fifth place through 36 holes. "Outside of that, everything else was really similar (to earlier rounds of 67 and 69), but nothing seems to be going in."

Ryu, who shot a 62 in the final round to win a year ago by seven strokes, shot a 70 and was six shots back of the leaders. Ko became the youngest LPGA winner ever when she took the Canadian Women's Open last year at 15, but she had a 71 and was tied with Ryu at 207.

Alison Walshe, tied with Recari and Creamer after the second round, fell back with a 73.

Creamer said that she'll try not to concentrate only on her version of match play with Ricari.

"You can get hot out here and shoot a low number, so I can't worry too much about what she's doing," she said. "I've got to go out and play my own game because there are going to be a lot of players that can fire at pins and post a low score. I'll just have to make as many birdies as I can."

China detains city workers after fruit seller dies

Six urban management officers in south-central China were detained Saturday by local police on suspicion of intentionally harming others after a watermelon vendor died in a conflict with the city code enforcers.

A man from the Linwu county police in Hunan province confirmed the detentions, as reported by the official Xinhua News agency, but he declined to give his name, which is common among low-ranking Chinese bureaucrats.

China's public have long resented the heavy-handed tactics of the urban management officers, known as "chengguan." They are often accused of beating people who commit minor infractions in shows of power that have fueled social tension.

On Wednesday, city code enforcers in Linwu accused the watermelon farmer, Deng Zhengjia, of selling his goods without a license and fined him 100 yuan ($16), according to state media reports. Later Deng and his wife Huang Xixi moved their watermelon stand to another venue, but the enforcers arrived and a quarrel ensued.

Eyewitnesses told state media that the enforcers beat Deng and his wife and that later Deng was seen lying on the ground, motionless.

Similar incidents in other parts of China have resulted in large protests and confrontations between residents and government officials.

In a written statement, Linwu county said Deng and Huang were selling watermelons in an area that was not designated for that and were uncooperative when the city code enforcers told the couple to move their stand to a designated area. It said the enforcers confiscated four watermelons and left the scene.

But when the patrolling enforcers encountered the couple at the new venue later, Deng and Huang swore at them, and the officers felt compelled to argue, the county statement said.

"The argument between the two sides developed into physical confrontations, and during the process, Deng Zhengjia suddenly fell and died," the statement said.

Xinhua said the local authorities have sought help from officials in another province to determine the cause of death for Deng.

Russian opposition leader freed on bail after protests

By Gabriela Baczynska

KIROV, Russia (Reuters) - Russia unexpectedly freed opposition leader Alexei Navalny on bail on Friday, bending to the will of thousands of protesters who denounced his five-year jail sentence as a crude attempt by President Vladimir Putin to silence him.

In a ruling that points to Kremlin uncertainty over how to handle Navalny's case and revived protests, a judge approved an unusual prosecution request to release him while he awaits the outcome of an appeal.

The anti-corruption campaigner's movements will be restricted to Moscow but he proclaimed the ruling, one day after he was convicted of theft, as a victory for people power.

"I am very grateful to all the people who supported us, all the people who went to (protest in Moscow's) Manezh Square and other squares," the 37-year-old said, rushing across the court to hug his wife after he was released from a glass courtroom cage.

"We understand perfectly well what has happened now. It's an absolutely unique phenomenon in Russian justice," he said in the court in Kirov, an industrial city 900 km (550 miles) northeast of Moscow.

People poured onto the streets of big Russian cities to protest on Thursday evening after Navalny was convicted of stealing at least 16 million roubles ($494,000) from a timber firm when he was advising the Kirov regional governor in 2009.

Police said more than 200 people were detained in St Petersburg and Moscow although there were no big clashes.

Navalny says the case was politically motivated and intended to sideline him as a political threat to Putin, even though his support is limited outside the big cities and opinion polls show the president is still Russia's most popular politician.

Navalny led anti-Putin protests which attracted tens of thousands last year before they started to fade when the former KGB spy was elected to a six-year third term as president.

The decision to release him could be a political manoeuvre to head off social unrest. Some political analysts said the Kremlin, and the business and security community around it, looked divided over Navalny.

"There really is a split in the elite," one analyst, Ella Paneyakh, said in an online comment. "And it seems there will be no peaceful outcome."

The Kremlin has not responded to calls for comment on the verdict and said nothing about Friday's ruling.

The United States and European Union voiced concern over Navalny's conviction, saying it raised questions about the rule of law and Russia's treatment of Putin's opponents.

The White House called it part of a "disturbing trend aimed at suppressing dissent".

Russian shares fell on Thursday on concerns the conviction may provoke unrest, after a case that led to comparisons with the political "show trials" under Soviet leader Josef Stalin.

At least 3,000 people protested near the Kremlin in Moscow on Thursday under a heavy police presence, blocking main streets and shouting "Freedom" and "Putin is a thief".

Police plunged into the crowd to pluck out people holding Navalny portraits. A police official said about 50 were detained, but activists said the number had reached 169 as smaller groups continued to protest past midnight.

At least 1,000 people protested in St Petersburg, where police said about 40 were detained, and smaller rallies were held in other cities.

Students at Sarah Bonnell School were inspired to raise over ?2,000 for a teenage cancer charity after two of their former classmates survived the illness.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Young women at the school in Deanery Road, Stratford, cooked up a storm with a group of Year 11 leavers, two of whom had beaten cancer, who returned especially to fundraise for the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) on Friday July 5.

They were allowed to wear their own clothes - and some girls were particularly comfortable in onesies - and the students sold 200 cupcakes in just 20 minutes along with TCT badges and wristbands.

In total, the students raised ?2,217.43.

Kalida, a former Year 11 pupil, said: ?This fundraising event wasn?t held just for the sake of it.

?It was to send out the message to teenagers that no one is to face cancer alone and death isn?t an option.

?This can be beaten with our help and support.?

Current Year 11 Tasmina said: ?Being part of the event gave me a feeling of overwhelming happiness, excitement, and joy and it was a pleasure to be part of the team of people who took part.

?My favourite part of the event was decorating the cakes that we sold at lunch time, and approaching teachers and students to explain why this event was going on and what the purpose of the event was.?

US Cellular to reintroduce contracts for existing customer upgrades

US Cellular to reintroduce contracts for existing customer upgrades

Snagging a subsidized phone after completing a two-year contract with US Cellular has meant not having to ink another 24-month commitment, but it looks like that's about to change. We've gotten wind from an internal source that the firm will return to its old ways, requiring existing Belief Plan customers angling for discounted hardware to hitch their wagon to the carrier for an additional two trips around the sun. These changes aren't slated to take effect until July 27th, so we recommend pulling the trigger on that upgrade you've been eyeing before then.

Powerful Pakistani politician's home raided by UK cops probing slaying

    /

Supporters of the Mutahida Qaumi Movement hold a picture of the party leader Altaf Hussain in Karachi, Pakistan, on June 30.

By Henry Austin, NBC News contributor

LONDON -- British police have raided the home and offices of the powerful exiled leader of a major Pakistani political party in connection with the murder of its co-founder and alleged money laundering.

Counter-terrorism officers executed search warrants at two suburban London properties linked to Altaf Hussain. He runs Pakistan?s fourth-biggest political party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, from his British base.

    /

Dr Imran Farooq was stabbed and beaten with a brick outside his suburban London apartment block in September 2010.

The party's co-founder Dr Imran Farooq died in September 2010 after being stabbed and beaten with a brick outside the apartment block where he lived in Edgware, on the outskirts of the U.K. capital.?

Police recovered a five-inch kitchen knife and the brick at the scene. A $31,000 reward has been offered in the case.

Hussain, 59, has lived in the U.K. since 1992 and is now a British citizen. Hussain and Farooq were both granted political asylum by Britain after claiming that Pakistani authorities were persecuting them for criticizing the government. ?

Two MQM officials confirmed on Friday that Hussain's properties had been raided by London's Metropolitan Police. The searches occurred on June 18.

In December, officers searched a "business address" in Edgware where "a quantity of money was recovered ... and seized" under British proceeds of crime laws, according to a police statement.

A "further significant sum of money" had been found during the operation on June 18, police said.

In a statement, Metropolitan Police said "an investigation continues into the circumstances in which the money to be at the properties."

Nadeem Nusrat, a London-based spokesman for the MQM, said a sum of money had been seized from Hussain's house.?

He added: "There is an ongoing investigation and we will prove this was legitimate money."

Six days after the raids, detectives arrested a man at London's Heathrow Airport on suspicion of conspiracy to murder after he arrived on a flight from Canada, where the MQM have offices in Toronto's Mississauga suburb. The 52-year-old was bailed but has not been charged with any offense.

Dr Farooq Sattar, a MQM spokesman,?confirmed that the man questioned on June 24 was a party member.

He said the party was "in shock" about the raids on Hussain's properties.?

?Dr Imran Farooq was and is a senior leader of the party and that his murder was a sad death to the party,? Sattar said. ?We would want to see the arrest of the real culprit as soon as possible. This is what our stance has been right from day one.

"Our leader has always professed to members of the party is zero tolerance for crime, violence and terrorism and this is what we are known for in Pakistan.? ?

Metropolitan Police are also investigating comments made by Hussain in the U.K. amid claims they may have incited violence in Pakistan. MQM officials insisted that Hussain had been misquoted.

Hussain was not available for comment on Friday.

The MQM is a secular party which endorses a "philosophy and practicalism."?The MQM won?18 out of ?the 19 national assembly seats in Karachi -- the country's largest city -- in May's election, according to Reuters.

Stop frying eggs, Death Valley officials say

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) ? It gets so hot in Death Valley that you can fry an egg with sun power.

That's what one Death Valley National Park employee did last week, when she took a frying pan to the pavement and posted the video online.

Park visitors park were quick to imitate her, but they didn't use skillets and left gooey messes. The park then issued a plea on its Facebook page to crack down on the egg-frying fiasco.

Death Valley highs have been hovering around 120 degrees, and on Wednesday the park marked the 100th anniversary of the world's hottest day on record ? 134 degrees ? set there in 1913.

Park rangers say the egg frying has since stopped due to rain and clouds that have rolled across Death Valley.

NY judge: Apple colluded to raise e-book prices

(AP) ? Apple Inc. milked the popularity of its iTunes store to form an illegal cartel with publishers to raise electronic book prices, a federal judge decided in a case swayed by the words of the late Steve Jobs.

Wednesday's ruling by U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan sided with government regulators' contention that Apple joined five major book publishers to gang up Amazon.com in a price-fixing conspiracy that caused consumers to pay more for electronic books.

Determined to protect one of the world's most beloved brands, Apple has steadfastly denied it did anything wrong, even as the book publishers involved in the case settled to avoid a trial. Apple didn't waver from its insistence of innocence after Cote drew an unflattering portrait of the iPhone and iPad maker in her 160-page ruling.

The Cupertino, Calif., company vowed to appeal the decision, extending a legal odyssey that could wind up in the U.S. Supreme Court.

It's unclear whether the initial outcome will have a dramatic impact on the pricing of e-books, which continue to supplant printed copies as more people buy tablets such as the iPad and other devices such as Amazon's Kindle.

"The effect on consumers will be negligible," predicted Ankur Kapoor, an antitrust specialist for Constantine Cannon in New York.

The earlier settlements with book publishers were designed to encourage more discounting. But that hasn't happened, even at Amazon, which had unnerved publishers by selling e-book versions of popular hardcover titles for $9.99 before the April 2010 release of Apple's iPad.

It's a discounting practice that Apple and the publishers sought to eliminate leading up to the iPad's debut, according to the antitrust lawsuit filed last year by the U.S. Justice Department and 33 state attorneys general.

Apple's iTunes store, where hundreds of millions of consumers already were regularly buying music, videos and applications, provided a powerful platform to undermine Amazon's pricing system, the government contended in arguments that ultimately convinced Cote, who presided over the two-and-half-week trial.

"Apple seized the moment and brilliantly played its hand," Cote said. She wrote that Apple's deals with publishers caused some e-book prices to rise 50 percent or more virtually overnight. As part of its standard commission, Apple received a 30 percent cut of each e-book sold.

Cote, who hasn't yet determined the financial scope of the damages, said the evidence was "overwhelming that Apple knew of the unlawful aims of the conspiracy and joined the conspiracy with the specific intent to help it succeed."

Jobs' words played a pivotal role in the trial's outcome, even though the Apple co-founder and longtime CEO died in October 2011 after a long battle with cancer.

Government lawyers cited some of Jobs' email exchanges and thoughts that he shared with his biographer Walter Isaacson as proof of his willingness to collude with publishers. His aim, lawyers argued, was to gain access to more digital content that would help make the iPad a more attractive device.

In her ruling, Cote said "compelling evidence of Apple's participation in the conspiracy" came from Jobs' words.

Isaacson wrote that Jobs said Apple assured publishers, "We'll go to the agency model, where you set the price, and we get our 30 percent and yes, the customer pays a little more, but that's what you want anyway."

Jobs told publishers that they had to allow Apple to sell at a lower price, if rivals also continued to discount. That's when the publishers asked Amazon to sign a contract requiring them to pay the higher "agency" prices. If Amazon refused, it wouldn't get any books to sell, Jobs told Isaacson.

The publishers that previously settled the price-fixing charges are Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Holtzbrinck Publishers, doing business as Macmillan, and The Penguin Publishing Co. Ltd., doing business as Penguin Group.

Even though those settlements removed the shackles that prevented Amazon from discounting, the $9.99 price for e-books that publishers dreaded has become increasingly rare.

For instance, a Simon & Schuster e-book published Tuesday, Brad Thor's "Hidden Order," was selling Wednesday for $12.74. Neil Gaiman's "The Ocean at the End of the Lane," released last month by an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, cost $12.80. The same e-books were listed for $12.99 apiece in Apple's iTunes store.

    Amazon declined to comment Wednesday.

The rising prices for e-books could be part of a nascent market's natural evolution rather than the by-product of a sinister scheme, according to Boston College Law School Professor David Olson.

"With Apple entering the scene, there were the beginnings of multiple platforms for e-books and distribution levels and instead of letting negotiation and pricing in the market shape itself, the court wants to freeze in time the price and the model that Amazon brought forth," Olson said.

In her ruling, Cote said the conspiracy harmed consumers in numerous ways. Some had to pay more for e-books, she said. Others bought a cheaper e-book rather than the one they preferred to purchase and others deferred a purchase altogether rather than pay the higher price.

Although she acknowledged that many of Apple's practices in its dealings with publishers would individually be legal, Cote said they collectively furthered the goal of raising e-book prices across the board.

Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said the addition of the iBookstore to the iTunes mall "gave customers more choice, injecting much needed innovation and competition into the market, breaking Amazon's monopolistic grip on the publishing industry."

Cote's decision wasn't surprising. She had urged Apple to settle before trial, warning that the company only had a slim chance of winning.

Apple did little to change her mind during the trial. She identified five trial witnesses as "noteworthy for their lack of credibility," including Eddy Cue, a top Apple executive described as Jobs' right-hand man.

Bill Baer, an assistant attorney general for the Justice Department, hailed the ruling as "a victory for millions of consumers who choose to read books electronically."

Kapoor, the antitrust lawyer, believes Apple has a good chance to win in its appeal. He thinks much of the evidence illustrates Jobs' ability to negotiate smart deals and transform markets. Just because Jobs "understood the industry dynamics doesn't mean that Apple and the publishers all agreed to raise prices," Kapoor said.

Cote said a damages trial would follow, though none was immediately scheduled. A conference hearing is scheduled for Aug. 9.

Investors largely shrugged off Apple's legal setback. Apple's stock shed just $1.62 to close at $420.73.
