Botswana to ban wildlife hunting

Botswana will ban commercial hunting from January 2014 over growing concerns about the sharp decline in wildlife species, officials have announced.

"The shooting of wild game for sport and trophies is no longer compatible with our commitment to preserve local fauna," the environment ministry said.

The ban is likely to be controversial as many communities depend on hunting for their livelihoods.

As much as a third of the global elephant population lives in Botswana.

Recent estimates place the number at about 130,000.

Conservationists are concerned about the erosion of river banks caused by the animals in some nature parks, the BBC's Letlhogile Lucas in the capital, Gaborone, reports.

The ban, set to come into place on 1 January, could also pose a threat to local communities, in particular bushmen, for whom hunting is a means to survive, our correspondent adds.

Furthermore selling hunting licences to wealthy Westerners is an extremely lucrative business, he says.

Hunting concessions currently exist in the northern Okavango Delta and the parks of the Kalahari region, famous for its upmarket safari lodges.

According to the environment ministry's official statement, the government will continue to issue special game licenses "for traditional hunting by some local communities within designated wildlife management areas".

Due to its seasonal nature, hunting has only contributed a minimal amount to the tourism sector, which ranks second to the diamond industry in terms of its revenue earnings, the ministry said.

Designated hunting zones will be turned into "photographic areas".

Earlier this year, Spain's King Juan Carlos faced international criticism for going on a hunting trip in Botswana.

Latino Action Network Blog: Congressional Hispanic Caucus Spells ...

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus announced today their principles on immigration reform. ?The CHC issued a document titled: "ONE NATION: Principles on Immigration Reform and Our Commitment to the American Dream" that spells out nine (9) principles for immigration reform including a path to permanent residency and eventual citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. ?It also includes protections for same-sex couples. ? A copy of the document appears below.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus

The Honorable Charles Gonzalez, Chair

November 28, 2012

ONE NATION:

Principles on Immigration Reform and Our Commitment to the American Dream

Today, we declare our commitment to the American people to work tirelessly toward common-sense, comprehensive immigration reform that serves America?s interests, promotes fairness and the rule of law and contributes effectively and meaningfully to our economic well-being and recovery.

America has always been a nation of immigrants. In order to preserve our history, national identity and culture we must create a modern, 21st century legal immigration system that reflects our legacy. Therefore, we commit to fighting for principled, comprehensive immigration reform that:

1. Requires the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. to register with the federal government, submit to fingerprinting and a criminal background check, learn English and American civics, and pay taxes to contribute fully and legally to our economy and earn a path to permanent residency and eventual citizenship;

2. Protects the unity and sanctity of the family, including the families of bi-national, same-sex couples, by reducing the family backlogs and keeping spouses, parents, and children together;

3. Attracts the best and the brightest investors, innovators, and skilled professionals, including those in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) studies, to help strengthen our economy, create jobs, and build a brighter future for all Americans;

4. Builds on the extraordinary success of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and incorporates DREAMers?those who were brought to the U.S. at a young age and are Americans but for a piece of paper?into the mainstream of life in the United States through a path to citizenship so that America benefits from their scholastic achievements, military service and pursuit of their dreams;

5. Includes a balanced, workable solution for the agriculture industry that ensures agricultural workers have a route to citizenship and employers have the workers and American agriculture continues to lead in our global economy;

6. Ends the exploitation of U.S. and immigrant workers by providing sufficient, safe, and legal avenues for foreign workers to fill legitimate gaps in our workforce, with full labor rights, protection from discrimination, and a reasonable path to permanency that lifts up wages and working conditions for both native and foreign-born workers and their families;

7. Ensures smart and reasonable enforcement that protects our borders and fosters commerce by targeting serious criminals and real threats at our northern and southern borders and promotes the safe and legitimate movement of people and goods at our ports of entry and which are essential to our economy;

8. Establishes a workable employment verification system that prevents unlawful employment and rewards employers and employees who play by the rules, while protecting Americans? right to work and their privacy; and

9. Renews our commitment to citizenship, to ensure all workers pay their fair share of taxes, fully integrate into our way of life and bear the same responsibilities as all Americans and reaffirms our shared belief that the Citizenship Clause of the Constitution is a fundamental freedom that must be preserved.

Our immigration laws ought to reflect both our interests and our values as Americans and we believe these principles are consistent with our nation?s commitment to fairness and equality. We commit to adhering to the above principles as we negotiate on behalf of all Americans in good faith with both parties and all stakeholders in the immigration reform debate. We acknowledge that the time to reform the system is long past due. We ask all sides to set aside the vitriol and gamesmanship that is often a part of this debate and that blocks our ability to truly solve the problem. The American people deserve nothing less.

Garden: A Few Secrets Of Attracting Customers Through Online

Internet has become the fastest means of communication among individuals across the world. It has also become the most effective means of connecting brand/business owners with their prospective customers. Online advertising also known as internet advertising or web advertising is one of the fast growing means of brand or business communication. This blog highlights a few secrets of attracting customers through online advertising.

Publishing unique articles or blogs about your business

It may surprise many brand or business owners, but it is true that publishing unique articles or blogs about your business helps in attractive various customers to your website thereby acquainting them about what your business offers. Ezine is one of the online publishing sites where you can publish your articles or blogs. A major advantage of publishing online articles or blogs is that it is usually free of cost and you can elaborately talk about your brand or business in detail. Customers who are directed to the publishing sites read the informative content. If the content sounds pretty interesting, they would be encouraged to adopt or buy the business or brand. Search Engine Marketing is one of the main tools of Internet Advertising. Writing articles and blogs and publishing them on various sites is also one of the main strategies of search engine marketing. Search engine optimizers make the most of this very strategy to promote their business among customers.

Making the most of Email marketing

Another secret of Web Advertising is to interact with customers through emails. Most of us do not forget to check our mail boxes. By presenting the brand message right through the inboxes of customers, advertisers can easily persuade them to go through the same. Email marketing is also a cost effective means of web advertising. Advertisers can sort out the mailing list of a particular email campaign and can target only those customers who will probably reach to the advertisement. A thorough demographic survey is however one of the assets of promoting a brand or business through email marketing.

Online advertising in any of its forms provides rich content and attractive graphic. Any visitor gets glued to the brand message because of such features. Most of the online ad campaigns convey interesting brand messages to customers which is why recall value is also pretty good through an online ad display. Banner advertising, virals, email and sms campaigns, PPC, pop ups etc. are some forms of online advertising adopted by brand owners to promote their products on web world.

Internet is a global platform for many products and services. Internet advertising is therefore the smartest means of brand communication. A brand or business advertised through online media can be accessed by customers from anywhere across the globe and also without any restraint of time factor. The message or information is available for 24 hours, 7 days a week, months and even for years. A website for a brand or business for example is one of the reliable means for anyone to access valuable information on the product or service. One can visit the website as many times as one prefers and also go through the information again and again. Repetitive readership is yet another advantage of creating an online presence of a brand or business.

Nude AIDS activists arrested in Boehner's office

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three women AIDS activists saying they wanted to highlight the "naked truth" about potential spending cuts in HIV programs were arrested Tuesday after taking their clothes off in the lobby of House Speaker John Boehner's office.

The trio had the words "AIDS cuts kill" painted on their bodies and had linked arms with four men who also disrobed as part of the protest. The nude protesters, along with dozens of other clothed demonstrators chanted slogans, including: "People with AIDS are under attack. What do we do? Fight back."

The three women were arrested by Capitol Police as they mingled with other protesters in the hall outside Boehner's district office after putting their clothes back on. The naked male protesters appeared to have left.

"People with AIDS are sick and tired of being pushed over the cliff," said Jennifer Flynn, 40, of New York City, who was among those arrested. "We need to make sure they stop going after people with AIDS."

Michael Tikili, 26, of New York City, said he is HIV-positive and depends on Medicaid for treatment.

"Just the idea of these programs being cut is horrible," Tikili said.

The three nude female protesters were charged with lewd and indecent acts under the District of Columbia's disorderly conduct law, a Capitol Police spokesman said.

The protest occurred as congressional leaders and President Barack Obama seek a deal to avert automatic spending cuts and tax increases in January. A coalition of AIDS activist groups gathering in Washington for Saturday's World AIDS Day organized the protest.

AMD planning to sell its Texas campus, prized baseball cards in hope of earning a few extra bucks

Cash-strapped businesses who just can't keep winking at their bank managers are turning to their real-estate assets for a little extra bread. AMD, no stranger to the process, is pondering flogging and leasing back its 58-acre Texas campus for around $200 million. Perhaps it could shack up with Nokia and Sharp in a Starbucks branch until its current woes abate.

Risk aversity visible in the brain

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Some people live their lives by the motto "no risk -- no fun!" and relish risks. Others are clearly more cautious and focus primarily on safety when investing and for other business activities. Scientists from the University of Bonn in cooperation with colleagues from the University of Zurich studied the attitudes towards risk in a group of 56 subjects. They found that in people who preferred safety, certain regions of the brain show a higher level of activation when they are confronted with quite unforeseeable situations. In addition, they do not distinguish as clearly as risk takers whether a situation is more or less risky than expected.

The results have just been published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We were especially interested in the link between risk preferences and the brain regions processing this information," says Prof. Dr. Bernd Weber from the Center for Economics and Neuroscience (CENs) at the University of Bonn. First, the researchers tested a total of 56 subjects for their willingness to take risks. "In an economic game, the test subjects had a choice between a secured payout and a lottery," reports Sarah Rudorf from CENs, the study's principal author. Those who showed a strong preference for the lottery in this test were categorized as risk takers. Others preferred the secured payout even if the lottery's odds of winning were clearly better. They were put in the risk-averse group.

In risk-averse individuals, certain regions of the brain are activated more strongly

Then the test subjects played a card game in a brain scanner to study their risk perception. Cards carrying numbers from one to ten were shown on the video glasses in front of their eyes. Each time, two cards were randomly drawn. Before the subjects were shown the cards, they were asked to place bets on whether the second card would have a higher or a lower number than the first one. "The statistical probability for either case to occur is always the same: fifty-fifty," says Prof. Weber. "This is important so that all subjects, whether they are risk takers or not, experience risky situations inside the scanner." They were not able to assess their probability of winning their bet until they saw the first card. Here, the researchers found that in the subjects who tended to avoid risks, two specific regions of the brain were activated more strongly than in those who were willing to take risks. These areas are the ventral striatum and the insular cortex. The ventral striatum reacts both to the probability of winning, as well as to how well an individual can predict the outcome of the bet. The insular cortex is particularly sensitive to the risk a situation carries, and for whether it is higher or lower than anticipated.

Risk seekers adjust their strategy after lucky streaks

Sarah Rudorf summarized the results, "Individuals in whom these regions of the brain are activated at a higher level seem to perceive risks more clearly and assess them as more negative than those who are willing to take risks." Risk-averse individuals seem to overestimate the con?sequences of risk, and they did not distinguish as clearly between situations that turned out to be more or less risky than expected. In contrast, the test subjects who tended to take greater risks also focused their behavior more towards the wins and losses, and more clearly changed their strategy after negative situations.

Study is first to show the neurobiological mechanisms

"This study is the first to show the neurobiological mechanisms of how individual risk preferences determine risk perception," says Prof. Weber. "This also has effects on behavior in the areas of finance and health." In a next step, the researchers want to study the consequences these results have on economic decisions such as in the stock market. "This might even allow improving the advising process for investors with regard to their individual risk behavior," says Prof. Weber. And he considers health another important area. Smokers know that what they do is very dangerous, and yet they smoke. "If we learned more about smokers' attitudes towards risk, we might be able to provide information for developing better anti-smoking campaigns."

Euro zone, IMF to seek Greece deal, debt write-off main problem

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund will seek to unfreeze the second bailout package for Greece on Monday, but they first need to agree if some of the official loans to Athens might eventually be forgiven to cut Greek debt.

Euro zone ministers and their deputies have held numerous meetings and conference calls over the last two weeks to decide how Greek debt, seen at almost 190 percent of GDP next year, could be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent in 8-10 years.

Without agreement on how to reduce the debt, euro zone ministers and the IMF do not want to resume payments of loan tranches to Athens -- even though Greece has met all the conditions -- because they have no guarantee on whether the need for emergency financing will ever end.

The key question is: Can Greek debt become sustainable without the euro zone writing off some of the loans to Athens?

So far, the options for debt reduction under consideration include reducing interest on already extended bilateral loans to Greece from the current 150 basis points above financing costs.

How much lower is not yet decided -- France and Italy would like to reduce the rate to 30 basis points (bps), while Germany and some other countries insist on a 90 bps margin.

Another option, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, is to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years.

The European Central Bank could forego profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, cutting the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for the ministers' talks last week showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are prepared to forego their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Greece could also buy back its privately-held bonds on the market at a deep discount, with gains from the operation depending on the scope and price.

But the preparatory document from last week said that the 120 percent target could not be reached in 2020, only two years later, unless the ministers accept losses on their loans to Athens, provide additional financing or force private creditors into selling Greek debt at a discount.

The latest analysis for the ministers showed the debt could come down to 125 percent of GDP in 2020, one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

To cut the debt more boldly, the IMF wants the euro zone to forgive Greece some of the official loans, in what is called Official Sector Involvement (OSI) in EU jargon.

This is an idea that several countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Slovakia, firmly reject.

On Monday, the biggest battle is likely to be over just that.

"OSI is at the core of the problems with reaching a deal," one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed.

European Central Bank executive board member Joerg Asmussen told the German Bild paper on Sunday that a write-down on Greek debt should not be part of the deal, echoing repeated statements from German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who said it would be illegal.

"It will be touch-and-go if we get a deal on Greece on Monday," a senior euro zone official said. "Euro zone countries have made concessions worth a lot of money already, so it is difficult to see how this can move even further."

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said on Sunday evening that euro zone ministers made big progress to reach a common position during at a conference call on Saturday in preparation for their talks with the IMF on Monday.

"I will go with a firm determination, with a mandate from the president and prime minister, to reach a conclusion," Moscovici said. "We are very close to a solution."

Moscovici mentioned the reduction of interest on bilateral loans, foregoing ECB profits on Greek bonds and the debt buy-back as the options that would need to be applied for a deal as well as additional financing for Athens to keep it funded until 2016, rather than only until 2014.

Lanyrd Jumps Into The Space Left By LinkedIn?s Events App Closure With New Features

1-dashboard-croppedAs of today, LinkedIn is shutting down its LinkedIn Events application. As you can see, the events industry is gnashing its teeth over this move. The events side of the app has been long used as a marketing element for many B2B event organisers and even as a revenue generator because of its power to highlight upcoming events. However, YC-graduate startup Lanyrd hopes to fill the gap today by integrating with LinkedIn and loosening its previously strong ties with Twitter buy allowing a registration outside of the social network.

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. Saints safeties Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins are trying to forget what Vernon Davis did to them the last time they faced San Francisco.

After being shredded by LaRod Stephen-Howling, the Falcons are hoping for better run support against the Muscle Hamster.

The Panthers get another chance to prove they?re ready for primetime.? (Or to prove they?re not.)

The 49ers? kick and punt coverage units have improved significantly in recent weeks.

Coach Jeff Fisher realizes something has to give when the Rams, who haven?t won in five straight games, face an Arizona team that has lost six straight.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton said that the intended message of the reduced use of S Adrian Wilson was ?do your job and do your job well.?

The Seahawks emerge from the bye week healthy and rested and ready for the stretch run.

Thanks to all ahead of time for your input.

1. Speakers have a break-in period.

2. Your amp should provide twice the power than your speaker are rated to handle in order to best drive the speakers (provide overhead and prevent amp clipping).

3. Your speakers should be rated to handle significantly more power than your amp can provide in order to ensure the speaker does not create distortion.

4. A round speaker will provide better quality of sound versus an oval speaker (eg. 6.5 vs. a 6x9).

5. As you pay a higher price for your component sets or separates the sound quality will be infinitely greater as will the construction of the speaker (eg. $1,000+ >$600 > $300).

You do realize the forum has a myth?s section, don?t you?

1. Speakers have a break-in period.

The jury is out on this one. While I have measured T/S Parameter differences between an out of the box subwoofer and that same subwoofer played in free air for 8 hours straight at a particular test tone, I can?t say that the T/S Parameters changed enough to provide an audible difference.
Actually, if you want to prevent amplifier clipping, you?d need a minimum of 10x the RMS power!

Also, what about your head unit clipping at the outputs? Or your external processor? Or the pre-amp section of your amplifier? You need to look at the point where you are trying to prevent clipping.

Now with that said, you can have all the power in the world, and you will still run into the negative aspects of power compression.

Sadly, a moving driver has an inherent amount of distortion. That?s just the way the ball bounces. I now laugh at how I used to get hung up on the distortion figures of amplifiers being 1%, .1%, .01%, .05%, and so on? Why? Because on average, most speakers reproduce music with double digit distortion figures due to their mechanical nature of reproducing sound. 5% to 10% is not uncommon in the automotive environment. Some people even have their subs producing 20% to 30% distortion.A properly designed speaker in the proper environment should sound relatively the same, regardless of its shape. The brand escapes me right now, but I know for certain there is at least one audiophile grade, home audio speaker set that uses oval woofers.Once you get to a certain price point, you reach the law of diminishing returns. Basically, you can double the cost of a particular product, and may receive a marginal improvement in sound. I'm talking something low, like 5% better versus OMFG, am I ever blown away by the quality. Conversely, I?ve been known to spend double the money and end up less satisfied than I was before.

Usually the more expensive speakers are made out of exotic materials that will contain: Kevlar, carbon fiber, some weird treated paper, an exotic basket material, rare earth magnets, etc.

With that written, you also have some grossly overpriced component sets out there that are marked at nearly $1,000 a set and contain less than $200 of raw components.

Is your mind blown yet?

The audio plot thickens!

Ever thought about an amplifier distortion in relation to a speakers distortion, as in synergistic effects or an amplifiers distortion exacerbating a speakers distortion?

Found it right after I posted . Anyhow this could be moved there and I wouldn't mind. I thought it would be nice to have all the major issues that a newbie runs into definitevly answered.

Like this one:

Oval speakers will typically distort at higher power faster than the equivilent round version? So if my objective is to get clear sound at say 115dbs in my car for the rock music I listen to, which speaker design do I go with? Factory has 6.5's in the doors but can fit a 6x9....oh what to do? That never ending question on the quest for the unattainable match of concert level volumes of rock music in my car with the clarity of jazz music.

1. Speakers have a break-in period. TRUE...Specifically Subs!

2. Your amp should provide twice the power than your speaker are rated to handle in order to best drive the speakers (provide overhead and prevent amp clipping). FALSE ... Amp design takes presidence. Too many amp manufacturers exaggerate their specs.

3. Your speakers should be rated to handle significantly more power than your amp can provide in order to ensure the speaker does not create distortion. FALSE/TRUE ... more of a crossover issue! Some speakers crave for more power than their stated max. Ex: I have 300 watts feeding my Rainbow Reference Mid-bass from my Audison Trenta.

4. A round speaker will provide better quality of sound versus an oval speaker (eg. 6.5 vs. a 6x9). Don't know...I never tried a 6x9...but I remember my brothers car about 30 years had a 6x9.

5. As you pay a higher price for your component sets or separates the sound quality will be infinitely greater as will the construction of the speaker (eg. $1,000+ >$600 > $300). FALSE ... Marketing is a glorified lies.

6. ??? No idea!

If pristine sound is what you want in the vehicle, give up now while you have a chance. I spent the better part of two years trying to attain the best possible sound I could in the vehicle, only to realize that a properly set up home system will EASILY outperform the car system at the fraction of the cost.

Let me tell you what I discovered...

1. The speakers in the vehicle are not placed in equidistant positions from the listener. This is much easier to achieve in the home, and while time alignment will partially get you there in the car, that time alignment in and of itself causes other issues.

2. The environment is mobile and subject to a multitude of problems from that alone. How are you going to deal with the reflections from the glass and the hard surfaces? What about extraneous variables such as other vehicles, tire noise, road noise, rain, wind, etc.? All of that will impact your pristine sound no matter how much time, money, and effort you put into reducing the extraneous noise variables.

3. The power source is 12 volts DC and your amplifier power is limited to what your battery can store and what your alternator can supply. In other words, lots of luck maintaining 115 decibels average (which is pretty loud) off a single battery and a factory alternator.

The bottom line is that car audio is a compromise, and you have to decide what deficiencies you are willing to accept prior to delving into it. If you don't, you could end up spending lots of money and time swapping gear, only to find that it was all a waste to begin with.

My last warning to you is to beware of the power of marketing! You'd be amazed at what you will hear based on what you believe from a preconceived notion.

I think it's all in what we have become accustomed to whether it's more or less accurate reproduction. Kind of the reason Velodyne quit making their servo subs. Rep told me people didn't like them cause they were too accurate, didn't like the sound of an accurate sub as they were use to listening to distortion and became accustomed to it.. lol. So your statement makes perfect sense.

Great advice as aside from becoming more knowledgable from this site I find I am wasting valuable time trying to attain the unattainable. SQ and Rock Music does not seem to go together. No one has the definitive answer but at least some definitive answers have been gathered in this post on a few issues I feel newbies like myself are encountering.

Thanks to all for the posts and anything else that you feel needs to be added.

I think that if you can get away from this SQ obsession that people seem to have and concern yourself with what is fun to listen to with YOUR music, you'll be much happier. I don't care what Diana Krall sounds like on a system because I listen to Nile. I only care that Nile sounds the best it possibly can. Don't demo a system or judge your system with jazz if you don't listen to jazz. There's my advice.

Wow, what kind of setup do you have in the car that is able to keep that sounding good at high ear deafening volume levels? Cuz I know you are not just driving around listening to it at normal conversation levels or less. I have to imagine the CD sounds so much better than the YouTube clip (musically speaking). But yeah, that and Tool, and stuff like Black Label Society is what I want to be rockin'. When I listen to music like this I like to "feel" the music on me (kind of like being at the show) and not just the drums either.

NHL labor talks to resume Wednesday morning

NEW YORK (AP) ? NHL owners and union officials are negotiating again at league headquarters Wednesday, the 67th day of the lockout.

The two sides are trying to work out impasses on core issues such as splitting revenue and player contracts. On Tuesday, union leaders met for internal discussions.

About a dozen players arrived at the league's headquarters Wednesday morning, along with lawyers and union executives.

If a deal is not struck soon, more games will have to be canceled in an already shortened season. The lockout has wiped out 327 games so far. The next games still scheduled are in December.
