The Downtown Pomona Owners Association announced the Community Heroes are retired Pomona Police detective Danny Kono and Detective Jennifer Turpin; Donna Dolgovin, founder of Helping Hands Caring Hearts ministry; and Tommy Manning, a community activist.
"Pomona is fortunate to have so many positive community role models to choose from, which is why the final hero selections were difficult," said Larry Egan, executive director of the association, in a statement.
Kono and Turpin were among the primary investigators who solved the case involving the shooting death of Ethan Esparza.
Kono joined the department in May 1980 as a police officer trainee and worked his way up to detective in 1992, according to the statement.
Turpin joined the department in October 1993 and worked in various areas before become a police investigator in January 2007. She currently handles robbery and cold case investigations, the statement said.
Dolgovin founded Helping Hands, Caring Hearts Ministry in 2003. She started out by providing food to a hungry homeless man. Her work grew and she now provides meals to about 150 people on Sundays.
Her ministry also runs a food bank, distributes clothing to the needy and provides donated pet food to the homeless for their pets.
Manning recently helped confront and subdue an unruly and threatening
passenger on a flight from Chicago to Long Beach, the statement said.The passenger, a young man, was restrained by several passengers, including Manning, and kept him under control for the last three hours of the flight, the statement said.
The four Community Heroes will take part in the Pomona Christmas Parade scheduled for Dec. 8.
The parade will have the theme, "A Golden Christmas."
Kim Rhode, Olympic gold medal skeet shooter, will serve as the event's grand marshal.
Participating in the parade will be children's groups, service clubs, car clubs, equestrian units as well as military and high school marching bands, the statement said.
The parade begins at 10 a.m at East Second and Gibbs Streets. The parade will travel west on Second Street and cross Garey Avenue before heading south on Park Avenue. The procession will turn east on Seventh Street and end in front of the Pomona Civic Center Plaza.
Following the parade festivities will continue at the plaza with the annual Holiday at the Plaza.
